Would someone kindly explain to me how dropped weapons work? Please feel free to assume I am an idiot.

You drop them. When vehicles run over the template, you roll the attack.

Where does the template go? When? And what about grenades?

I wish to kill you, be at rest as to that, but to kill you quietly in a snug, remote place, where you will not be able to boast of your death to anybody

After moving, when you fire weapons, you place the appropriate template for the dropped weapon on the ground, behind the vehicle. The effect of the template occurs when a car drives over it (or shoots through it, in the case of Smoke). Spikes and mines are removed once a car drives over them, but the others stay for the whole game.

Grenades and Molotovs are like one-shot hand weapon (medium Range, 360 degree arc)

And to cover all the template weapons, Flamethrowers affect all vehicles under the template, but do not remain on the battlefield.

Thanks. I now feel like an enlightened idiot as opposed to merely a confused idiot.

It only goes behind the vehicle if it's rear-mounted.

Good point, I should have said "Side or rear, depending on the weapon's facing"

Note that dropped weapons CANNOT be mounted Forward.

Well that is a silly constraint.

The circled panel line has stuck with me since I bought the original Mad Magazine that contained this:

So if its side mounted you may place it on either side of the vehicle? Where precisely on the side of the vehicle can you place it? In the middle? Seems more flexible to have them on the side then in the rear?

Yes, you may place it on either side. All templates may be placed along any point of the facing, so long as they are parallel and touching that facing. So you can take the Large template and slide it up and down the side of the vehicle so log as it remains in contact with the side of the vehicle.

In general, the placement of dropped or shooting templates IS more flexible on the side rather than the front or back, but then you have to strategically employ slides and spins to properly align the attacking vehicle with the target.
