Scenario K5: Ocean Ripples

Narrative: A major Indo-Pakistani War is drawing the global powers into the conflict as allies of India and Pakistan. The Chinese seek to assist in reducing Indian air superiority by sending three large carrier task forces to the Indian Ocean. The US responds by sending two carrier task forces, one already on operations in the Vietnam area and the other racing from Okinawa, to stop them, or at least slow them down. Vietnam, the Phillipines and Malaysia have to choose sides.

Situation: This scenario may be played as a basic two-player game with only the PRC and US players, or it may be played as a larger two or five player game (referred to in this scenario description as the “expanded version”) with the addition of Malaysian, Vietnamese and Philippine forces. If playing the expanded version with two players, one player plays China and Malaysia and the other plays the US and Vietnam. Control of the Philippines alternates per standard rules.

Play ten military turns only in the basic two player game. Assume that the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam have elected to stay neutral and do not set up their forces. However, assume that all
necessary political card play to make military cooperation possible occurred earlier and that the Philippines declares military cooperation with the US on the first turn.

Play six political turns and ten military turns in the expanded game. (Keep in mind the usefulness of Okinawan-based US aircraft depends entirely on Philippine military co-operation!)

Special Rule: PRC naval units and their embarked air units (only) may exit the south edge of the map between hex column 07XX and 26XX by spending one movement point while occupying a hex in the XX26 row. Units which exit off the south edge of the map are removed from the game for all intents and purposes except the tallying of VP for cv-capable air unit steps (see below). Units which exit the map may not be re-entered, be the targets of strikes or launch strikes.

Victory Conditions: Modify the usual victory rules (2.6) as follows.

Use all standard VPs for military events, but add the following:

For each STEP of PRC cv-capable air unit that exits off the south edge of the map between hex column 07XX and 26XX while embarked on a CVN, +1 VP

If no PRC CVN is within eight hexes of the south edge of the map between hex column 07XX and 26XX at game end, -2 VP.

If the PRC loses two CVNs the PRC player automatically loses.

Great addition to the SCS inventory. If you have the time, I recommend testing and then compiling all these scenarios into a master list that you might submit to Compass Games for possible publication in an issue of Paper Wars. Fan-generated scenarios are great for magazines.
