Hi all. I was talking about this somewhere else, and now I'm wondering which game is the first one where building something from your player board will unlock extra income or bonuses, with different buildings giving you different things.

Several games come to mind:
- Hansa Teutonica (2009)
- Eclipse (2011)
- Terra Mystica (2012) and Gaia Project (2017)

Are there others? (Even if not earlier than these.)

Scythe and Clans of Caledonia come to mind, though they are both more recent.

Oh yeah. Scythe was actually mentioned in the discussion, and I own CoC as well, not sure how I forgot about it. The designer has been quite open about the fact that Terra Mystica was an inspiration.

Various much older wargames have players spending money or resources on research, to "unlock" various new technologies and abilities.

E.g. Stellar Conquest (1975) is a science fiction 4X example.

It's penalties, not bonuses, but Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization (2006) was the first game I remember seeing things get uncovered on your player board as you build stuff. It was new to me then and I remember thinking it was pretty clever at the time. I'm sure many games did it before though.

There's this obscure game called Monopoly where you get income for building "houses" and "hotels" on your property.

I hadn't thought of technology/research, but I guess it's similar. However I'm more interested about this happening in euro-games. Through the Ages has some similarity, indeed.

The Babylon Project was our last best hope for peace. It failed. In the year of the Shadow War, it became something greater, our last best hope for victory.

Monopoly? houses & hotels? Are there any alternatively themed versions?

Catan has a couple of different buildings. Maybe the base game doesn't quite cut what you are looking for but the expansions are still all older than most of the "euros" mentioned above and contain different ways to upgrade things with different effects.

Just looking at part of my collection:

Great Western Trail
Kingsburg
My Village
Mombasa
Panamax
Dilluvia Project
Ora et Labora
La Granja
Goa
Haspelknecht
Clans of Caledonia
Hansa Teutonica
Rise to Nobility
Nusfjord
Lancaster
Whistle Stop
Prêt-à-Porter
Dragon Brew

Some of these, you are creating your player board as the game progresses, unlocking bonuses and powers. As such, I included them in my list.

Kind of sounds like what you are talking about, since you take the card into your hand then play it out.
