It's a common path to follow when learning a new game:
Game 1: I lost, and I have no idea why.
Game 2: I lost, but I think I know why!
Game 3: I lost, and my bright ideas after Game 2 weren't so bright.
Game 4: I lost, but ... ah ha! ... I think I know why this time!
Game 5: I did it, I finally won! (on easy mode, of course)
I am new to the Race for the Galaxy world, but I loved it immediately. So right away I bought the expansion so I can play solo, which I've done the past few nights. I finally put together a cohesive military strategy to come away with a 39-26 victory.
My first lucky event was getting some military cards and "New Galactic Order". At the end of the game, that card generated 15 points.
But, I'll be honest, I was lucky. The robot only drew one world which generated any points.
So, I'll probably lose the next few times I play. But at some point I'll win again, and then I'll consider moving up from easy mode.
