IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - PLEASE READ

Through some messages with the admin (seen below), I have received some truly terrible news. cry

This started when someone at the Discord talked about how the forum search function was harder to find than the white text box site search function. I sent a message about that, and got this in return:

     cry cry cry cry cry

My message back, also from the email notification:

The Admin was responding via the sister site Trade Cards Online (TCO), and these pictures come from my messages section there.

I wanted full confirmation before informing the Pirates community, so here is a message I sent after waiting a few days:

Earlier today:

My most recent response:

So. Things are in BIG trouble. I'd say this is probably the worst news the Pirates CSG community has gotten since the "cards-only" flop version was announced in 2011 or whenever. It has certainly put a damper on my week.

Any non-confidential information I receive will be shared in this thread and posted as it comes available to me. I want to keep everyone informed about any and all information that we can use.

HOWEVER, this is just the beginning. Three months gives us plenty of time to recover and save tons of information from the site, even if there is no coming back. In addition, I have already sent a message to Cardmarket, which you can see below.

I actually have an account at CardMarket (guess I'll abbreviate CM for now - not cargo master haha) from earlier this year because I made about 5 euros from two people buying premium on MT through my affiliate link. I didn't know it until this year, but CM apparently acts as the way MT (and TCO I would imagine) distributes these payments (prior to this year I just had Friendship Points from referrals, never premium commissions).

It is time to reach out to CardMarket and let them know how badly we need to see Miniature Trading survive!!!!!!

From the above picture you can see their basic contact email address. They say their contact form is the best way to contact them. I sent the same message through that before copying and pasting it into an email message as well. Unfortunately you seem to need an account to use the contact form, so email would be easier. Do both if possible.

Feel free to post here if you've contacted them, with your message if you want/etc. And any information you receive back from them should obviously be posted here.

I think it is slightly too early to talk about alternatives, but BoardGameGeek is the only other acceptable forum for the game in my opinion. I say this because the organization (or COMPLETE LACK thereof) of the systems at Facebook, reddit, and Discord are nothing compared to what we have here at Miniature Trading. The main problem I think about right now is solvency. The "giants" mentioned above are likely to survive for far longer than Miniature Trading, but in my opinion only BGG is capable of supporting this great community the way it needs. They don't have a fleets and Miniature Reviews section, but those could be done with the forum categories/etc. I have had a middling to subpar experience at BGG overall, so I'm not highly recommending it. It's just the only other site with the proper forum features to be a "replacement". I have thought about trying to build some kind of forum off my own Pirates CSG fansite, Pirates with Ben. Only time will tell what solutions seem best and most practical. Other solutions such as a free forum like the custom set forum are dubious and could dissolve or suffer a similar fate as MT. Personally, I'd like to just host things myself and pay for it for the peace of mind, rather than relying on an external entity/company/website for preserving things. To that end I may look heavily into further expanding my fansite to make it more of a community site. (no promises, but hopefully, especially if people show interest)

SAVING AND DOCUMENTING INFORMATION

After receiving the bad news in that message on August 20th, I began what could become a long project of archiving and saving stuff from Miniature Trading. I know the Wayback Machine could be great for this, but between photobucket, postimages, and now Miniature Trading (and other past Pirates sites), I don't really trust any of these online entities. So I'd rather keep stuff myself and rely on nothing but my own devices and "the cloud".

I have already begun transferring some of my longer and more useful/informative posts (Huge Game Legacy, Beginner's Guide, etc) to Pirates with Ben to be posted as pages or posts in the future.

Beyond saving things as text files and copying and pasting text from the forums and whatnot, we can take PICTURES! You can search your computer for a preinstalled Snipping Tool, which I have used a lot (including the messages above).

However, an even better solution for saving threads, fleets, and Miniature Reviews:
Full Page Screen Capture

I just started using this a few days ago, and it is FANTASTIC. It also carries a 5/5 star rating from nearly 20,000 reviews. It works pretty quickly and grabs the entire page by scrolling your browser window.

Edit: This paragraph is old now, refers to what I saved before first submitting this thread. Saving more as I go along. [These are all from the Thread of Threads. These were the first things I wanted to save, the top-tier best of the best things I would HATE to lose forever. I've uploaded them to postimages (not that they're trustworthy either of course haha) and will look into additional storage solutions like google drive, external storage, etc. In a post below I will try to post a picture of a forum page so you know what to expect from the extension if you want to use it (or a different one).]

I also have pretty much all of my battle reports archived in google docs, but I'll be checking those sometime to make sure I have all of them. (and in a document file as well)

Once I finish posting this, I plan to take captures of ALL the sets in the database. Saving each individual picture would take a LONG time, but perhaps there's some way to save the gallery pictures separately more easily than that. :?:

Here is a list of things to think about for your personal contributions.

What should you save?
-Profile page
-Tracked Trades history and references (could come in handy for reputation on other sites)
-Fleets
-Miniature Reviews
-Haves and Wants!
-History of merit points and posts per month/etc (personal stats) (I know I'm probably the only one who has done this XD)

Once you're satisfied with saving whatever you want from your own profile/etc, feel free to save what you want from the forum/old fleets/etc. Please post here what you have saved/archived, and possibly provide a link to a public photo gallery or something if you'd like. Given the 3 month time span (hopefully the plug won't be pulled sooner....), we could pretty much archive the entire site if we wanted to and recreate it somewhere else with the files/pictures/info. Not that we need to save every thread (not nearly), but there is certainly a core chunk of Miniature Trading that would be truly awful to lose.

What else can we do? I've re-enabled ads on MT by disabling my adblocker for all of Miniature Trading's pages. The potential tiny ad revenue is not likely to help, but obviously there is some desperation in the situation. Given this disastrous news, I would hold off on any Miniature Trading related projects for now, and save any future thread ideas/etc into a document stored elsewhere.
-If you have any other ideas/etc on the situation and how best to handle it, please post your thoughts here.

Weirdly enough, postimages was not working when I tried to submit this post, so I had to use imgur to host the pictures instead. Ugh. I love this whole internet thing, but it's rather impermanent for my tastes.

I don't know the full details of the situation, but this feels eerily similar to the Wizkids shutdown and subsequent (and in hindsight, undesired) takeover by NECA. CardMarket is apparently going to take over and shut down our beloved Miniature Trading site! The good news or silver lining this time, unlike back in 2008: WE HAVE A WARNING. Let's make the most of it!

There is so much to do. So much to save. So many messages to be sent. Let's do it!!

Well, is it possible to migrate the threads & users here to BGG? You could even start a guild for Pirates only conversations!

The tricky part would be how to move the collection database, tools, & various user fleets. Perhaps some discussion with the BGG admins & site developers could shed some light on the matter....

That would be the easy part, and yes both would be simple. I've already started taking full page pictures of important threads. I am hesitant to fully endorse BGG as an alternative because my own experience here has been subpar at times.

Possibly, not sure that they would care. I'm quite tired of having various stuff hosted by external parties and websites, so I'm looking into potentially expanding my fansite (https://pirateswithben.com/).

I'd bet the community would be 100% behind you if you expanded your site. We'll be considerably more future-proofed, and you could tailor the database specifically, etc. I have NO web design chops, so I have no clue how expensive or difficult it would be to implement, but I'd be more than willing to provide a little financial backing. You could take it to Patreon or something too.

THANK YOU so much! This afternoon I've been working on adding forum features. A database will probably be trickier, but it may not cost much to implement (mostly time/learning). But I'm still just in the beginning stages of dealing with all this, so who knows.

Funny you mention Patreon, since I was going to create a page sometime that I own, but is kind of "for the good of the game". Now with this sudden crisis, that has been put off, but it's still on my Pirates to do list.

Future updates will be posted for sure, mostly at MT (ironically...) but also the Facebook group and my site itself I think. (and probably everywhere that is relevant for big news/updates (hopefully there will be some lol))

Might start doing a daily post of my progress on stuff. Going to be raw and random, partly just as a way for me to keep track of what I've done and tasks/etc for the next day+.

8/24/2018
Started running httrack from recommendation at subreddit. Entered homepage url of MT for site to “mirror”, will leave computer on and let it run.
Created a new Pirates-based Gmail account, primarily for data storage and backup
-Made a primitive/starter forum at PwB, tested functions of logging in/out and posting successfully via a second account. Much work to be done with it, but basics seem to work.
Used google sheets embedding to put spreadsheet of Customs on My Custom Stuff page
Experimenting on this due to possibility of an google sheets or excel-based database that could be embedded/etc into my site
Key would be to have a searchable database that could be filtered/etc. (hoping the plugin can help with that)
-Plugin does not display my Customs spreadsheet properly - through some searching it seems I should edit the stylesheet/css, which I’ll probably try to figure out unless another option seems better. (current page is simple embedding, not using plugin)
https://wordpress.org/plugins/inline-google-spreadsheet-view...
https://maymay.net/blog/projects/inline-google-spreadsheet-v...
-Any way to easily download all Pirates database pictures from MT? (just the picture files, so we can host them elsewhere and still have them) (already sent a different message to admin about something else, but may inquire about this possibility as well)
-Saved all of my Miniature Reviews: https://imgur.com/a/gp9MpIU (will also be posting them to my fansite Pirates with Ben as time allows)

It's good to use BGG to! The main downside to BGG is that the BGG admins don't like the idea of uploading the entire asset library of the game to their site.

Got email from user from reddit who recommended httrack - will look into details of stuff tomorrow
Ran httrack “update” or “fix” of some kind on the original mirroring process from MT’s homepage - seems to have updated the data on my computer, as the directory seems larger (way too much to look at/decipher)
Got this amusing message from the log file errors once it finished:
"23:00:30 Panic: Too many URLs, giving up..(>100000)"
-This second process took about 16 hours (23 is 11pm Military Time locally I guess), very similar to the first. Might need to investigate running httrack on more limited urls (rather than trying to capture ALL of Miniature Trading lol)
Saved my oldest page of fleets, hope to save rest tomorrow https://imgur.com/a/jpcGciI
-I’ve been uploading pictures (of fleets/MR/forum pages) to a combination of google drive, imgur, and postimages for extra backup and security
Overwhelmed, but making progress! Hoping to make progress on various stuff every day.
(and yes, I’m posting this at BGG and my fansite so it won’t disappear forever if MT suddenly dissolves)

Saved OTC3 thread https://imgur.com/a/HofdSiP
Made thread about unlocking stuff to edit posts to save raw text
Started posting updates at Facebook group as well
Saved the rest of my fleets - 116 in total! Took about 1.5 hours. https://imgur.com/a/jpcGciI
Uploaded pretty much all picture files taken so far to a combination of google drive/google photos (most were already on a combination of those two and imgur/postimages as well). In total some of the images I’m saving are going to have copies in 4 or 5+ places between my computer and the web.
Took pictures of threads from the ToT, album of forum images here: https://imgur.com/a/yF3hU5L
-Now all of the threads under “Very Useful Threads” have been saved.

Stopped an httrack mirror/download of the Spanish Main unlimited set url after 45 hours of it continuously running. (no idea why it took longer than the url for MT’s homepage, and it was definitely grabbing all sorts of stuff I don’t need)
Published another Miniature Review on Pirates with Ben (so I have the text and format in another place besides just a full page screenshot of the review at MT)

MY PLAN
1. Get a searchable database at Pirates with Ben
-I already have picture files for most or all of the miniatures via a somewhat successful run of httrack. Most are not the full size so I hope to get the bigger versions of the pictures with more attempts.
-Woelf plans to share set spreadsheets with me, which should give me the correct versions of all miniature information. If there are any hitches with that, using the right scan settings/filters on httrack should give me html files for all miniature pages (haven't found them yet in existing httrack downloads) which should be convertible to a spreadsheet from there.
--With those two items I should be able to create a database eventually, the how part is still to be determined.

2. Working forum at Pirates with Ben + Save info from MT forum
-The former is in progress but not nearly as high a priority as the database. Forum is up and running, posts show up, someone successfully joined and posted, threads and posts show up, etc - those are the main basics that are essential of course. Eventually I’ll mess around with settings to hopefully improve it a lot, better layout/look, hopefully change where the Login/Register buttons are, etc.
-Full page screen capture works great for saving threads from MT, but the picture files aren’t searchable like the text of course. I hope to find some kind of automated solution that gives me either full text from entire threads (Custom Ships, Rules thread, etc…) or pictures of the same, without me having to copy/save everything one by one. Not sure that httrack will help with this, but plan to look into other programs.

3. Trading system?
-No idea if this will even be looked at before October or beyond, but ideally between the database and the existing user profile format at PwB, I might even be able to implement some kind of trading solution as well. No promises because I’m basically still in the first stage of step 1! XD

8/28/2018
Fooled and played around with httrack for a while this morning - stuff I tried didn’t seem to work (trying to extract Pirate images from MT without downloading html), but I do seem to have most of the images on my computer now…
Put another of my Miniature Reviews on PwB as a text post
-Once again I looked at what httrack has downloaded for me from MT, and it seems I have html files for user profiles instead of the same for Pirates game pieces. Oh well, need to refine things and keep learning I guess.

A bit of a confusing combination in the first line, but that first sentence is still enough to make me think that MT is still in big trouble. I'll just keep going with my efforts so we can have the game's history and info in the hands of the community.

I do find the timing of all this rather ironic and strange. Wizkids was shut down on November 10th, 2008. Miniature Trading may shut down in late November 2018, almost exactly 10 years to the day. O_O What should we prepare for in 2028? XD

8/29/2018
Edited forum at PwB so users can edit posts. (for the next 175 million years anyway lol, initial number was set too high I guess XD)
Got another Miniature Review in text form up on Pirates with Ben
-Tried two Chrome extensions that supposedly download all pictures from a web page - neither worked. One seemed to sign me out of my google account so I’ll probably stick with httrack for now.
-Used a search for “html” in File Explorer in an attempt to find html files of miniature pages (for Pirates of course) or forum topics. Haven’t found much of either, but there’s still a lot to go through. Truly a maze of stuff… some html files link to the same webpage, making it even more confusing. Plus I've got a ton of stuff from other (non-Pirates CSG) games.
-Generally struck out with trying new stuff. I still am on the lookout for programs or maybe extensions that give me a way to download entire forum topics at once somehow (such as a 50 page thread that would be very tedious to download pictures for). Feel free to comment if you’ve used something like this (repagination, downthemall, etc. are some I’ve seen)

Did a search for “jpg” files in the File Explorer for the main httrack download that was completed some days ago. There are a TON of files and pictures (28,533 files for this one search!); I think I’ll make a zip folder with all the info publicly available in case other people want to browse it in the future for stuff from other games.

9/1/2018 - A BIG breakthrough!
-Ran httrack on the MT database page for Spanish Main first edition to only take picture files (jpg, etc). “Get separated files” didn’t work, basically returned nothing downloaded. Then ran “download web site” with the same criteria (supposed to only download files with picture extensions like .jpg, .png, etc). This worked!! I now have all the picture files from Miniature Trading for Pirates CSG. The download returned more pictures than I bargained for, since I was after the max size pictures (a previous httrack run gave me tiny versions of them). It gave me three different sizes, but I seem to have the largest version of each picture in the Pirates database, which is great!

-Another MR up on Pirates with Ben (two actually)

SAVED:
All fleets from VASSAL Tournament #2 (T2) (so all of these fleets are saved)

-Added a plugin so that forum users at Pirates with Ben can now preview their own posts (you can also edit your own posts which I introduced earlier)
-Another MR up on Pirates with Ben (one per day)
-Updated all past MR’s with the actual stats and abilities of the miniatures in question (oops)
-Received some of the official set data/spreadsheets from Woelf. I will begin compiling, organizing, and formatting the start of a “master spreadsheet”!

(September 4th 2018)
I have begun making the master spreadsheet!! Today I finished Spanish Main Limited/First Edition. I’m using a combination of Wizkids official spreadsheets that Woelf is sharing with me, the Jolly Roger by Holofernes, the MT database, and various pieces of information from the Wikipedia page and MT forums for clarifications. SM Limited is actually one of the most confusing sets, so hopefully I can increase the pace as I go along. My goal is at least one set per day, but hopefully more. I am trying to be as comprehensive and detailed as possible, and once the spreadsheet is finally done I plan to make it public of course (though I may try to get a database up on my fansite before then, since I’d prefer to make necessary edits before a public release).
-These two final posts of this thread came in quite handy: http://m.miniaturetrading.com/im/forum/viewtopic/p=20282///#...

A reminder that it makes sense to save your profile page with trade references extended - this way you not only see the references, but also the detailed evaluations which could be a great thing to have for future trading opportunities. My page for example: (click twice for full size)

PS: Found an old goodie on my travels today while going through some of Holofernes’ old posts looking for information: http://www.dvandom.com/kitbash/pirates.html

Added filtering system to master spreadsheet
Great way to use the correct numbering system in Google sheets for sets/custom sets: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/docs/kl0Ueam1... (use a custom number format “000” so you can see the first game piece of a set as 001 instead of 1)
Will take a WHILE to get all the sets uploaded - no fast and easy way to get all the data into the spreadsheet the way it needs to be, especially considering the multitude of sources. (also having to copy and paste each ship’s cannons individually since they’re not in that format in the Jolly Roger or official WK spreadsheets) Will be difficult to do more than one set per day.
-Resaving a copy of the spreadsheet as an .xlsx document at the end of each day so I don’t lose everything if google implodes or loses the spreadsheet somehow XD.

Finished SM Unlimited and most of Crimson Coast!

Was listening to some classical while I worked on the spreadsheet: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLR_xCgMZxpEhsLTENwBgZ...

-Another MR up on Pirates with Ben

For a while now I'll mostly just be working on the master spreadsheet, so there may not be many updates until next Monday or later.

Reposting some stuff here in case MT goes down faster than expected....
I don't know of any fancy mass-download programs, so in the meantime I guess I'll just copy and paste it to a Word Doc. :?
As I've already talked about in the main thread, I actually think trying to find a program to "save the forum" through an automated process is the best way to go, until that option is proven ineffective or we can't find a practical solution in that regard. Searching for 30 minutes for a program that can "download the forum" (as pictures/text/html, etc) could be awesome if it saves people 10 hours of full page picture taking. I haven't been able to configure httrack to do exactly what I want in that regard yet, but I've also started to look into other solutions. Not nearly every thread deserves saving in the Pirates forum, but there is SO much that should be saved that trying to take pictures of it all (or copying text) is going to take a huge amount of time. For now my efforts are going towards the creation of the master spreadsheet, which I should be able to turn into a second database. Once I'm done with that I plan to refocus back on the forum stuff.

I know this is a really random information dump, but here are some notes from my Pirates with Ben google doc where I'm keeping track of the "save MT" stuff:
Saving done by A7xfanben: [Question: Are all these done using the full-page screenshot function that you described?]
Yes, and as I've linked to multiple times, they are publicly viewable on imgur here:
https://a7xfanben.imgur.com/
Question: What are the most important items that have not been saved yet?

Personal favorites of mine that I nominate:
Lordstu's fleets and reviews
Phymatine's fleets and reviews
The Black Mongoose Tavern thread, What are you doing right now?
http://www.miniaturetrading.com/im/forum/viewtopic/t=3274///
Rustyhook's fictional story (although he owns the creative rights to the story, of course -- it's his story!)
http://www.miniaturetrading.com/im/forum/viewtopic/t=4184///
http://www.miniaturetrading.com/im/forum/viewtopic/t=4150///
I suggest you save those in that case, especially because I don't think many people will prioritize the BMT (understandably). Fleet Challenges were one of the next things on my list before Woelf shared the official WK spreadsheets with me and I got to work on the master spreadsheet. I don't think every page of every FC thread needs saving, but the first page with each FC's rules/etc along with the voting polls or winner pick post would be great. Saving all the fleets entered becomes more difficult, but that's where the sticky thread would help as well. As I said though, I think it'd be worth looking further into a program that can download/save stuff while the computer is on but doesn't require constant picture taking/text copying.

Personally I feel that it is up to each member of the forum to save their own stuff (fleets/MR's/references/profile page/etc). It can't be high on my priority list yet, but eventually I hope to save various fleets and MR's from past members, such as lordstu and bookwyrm. (among many others if I can get the time and/or find an automated solution)

Are you saving these big posts you're making somewhere else? I'm saving pretty much every post I make about the situation in the BGG thread as well, in addition to doing the progress updates on my fansite. MT went down for about a week either earlier this year or in 2017, and if something similar happens again there's a chance we will not be getting it back this time around.

I completely agree with this statement. Each member of MT is responsible for their content.
