The year was 1333.

The great Italian Generals and their mercenary groups were just starting to form. It seemed this year would be the year 6 General decided to clash. Battles would be fought in the City-States all across Italy. The Pope would even have a say where these battles can not happen. The Generals would decide where they would.

There were many battles in the 1st year (before re-dealing was needed). But, the Pope decided to visit many of these battle fields and declare peace. He could not stop them all though as some generals managed to out-smart him and wait for an ample opportunity to attack. There were not any memorable battles of note on record for this first year of conflict. It seem the Generals were more worried about losing their troops than winning battles (many scarecrows played).

At the end of the first year four generals had claimed 6 city-states of Italy. It was a good showing between the four where if one were keeping score it would look as follows: 3-2-1-1. No one was able to claim an adjacent city-state to another they has conquered. Only separated by one city-state things looked promising for the two leaders.

Things started as expected in year two: slow. Everyone was waiting for the perfetto (Itailian) time to strike. It wasn't until mid-year until a big battle broke out among the two favored generals. That battle saw the last signs of spring, multiple heroes and even drummers of all things. The leader had 63 men on the field versus 58 of the other combatant. But much to the leader's surprise the Pope decided to show up for the 5th time that year. This left both Generals spent for the year until they could refill their ranks.

Amidst the intense battling the two leading Generals forgot to leave some line of defense. This was their undoing as another was able to come from behind much uncontested and take Italy for their own.

So ended another chapter in the history of the Condottieri p.. The winner may have taken Italy now but it would be many years before he would stop competing with other would-be generals. Maybe he was one of the greats the records do not show. We may find out some day but until then may your battles be blessed with the warmth of spring.
