The spare sets of Abalone balls came with the rules for the three-player variant.

For anyone interested... I found out that the game ZÈRTZ has the same size marbles as Abalone. There is black, white, and two different kinds of spotted gray. These last two work perfectly for the additional 2 players. A new game AND an expansion in one!!!

Since no-one ever answered this question, the marbles in my set (1999 Abalone Games 2nd Edition) are exactly 22mm diameter. Nearest imperial size is 7/8" - in fact mine drop clean through a 7/8" aperture without touching the sides, but as marbles aren't made to that precision you'd never notice the difference I guess.

I own both red 22 mm marbles and yellow 24 mm marbles. I think the yellow ones are older.
