RACE 9 - Anniversary Track (33)
August 23, 2007

PLAYOFF RACE #2 of 4

ABOUT THE LEAGUE
The Sharp Pencil League is in its seventh season. We award a Team Championship trophy at the end of the year and a Driver of the Year award at the end of the regular season. (This year's Driver of the Year went to Jim Gelatino of Team Goo for the second consecutive year.)

We have 10 teams that run two cars each. This year, we split into two distinct divisions and ran 6 races on identical tracks before coming together for the All-Star race in Week 7. The top driver from each team was invited to the All-Star race, with qualifying based on each driver's performance in the previous six races.

At the end of the 7th race, the top two teams from each division, along with one wild card team, all advanced to a 4-race playoff. The rest of the field was eliminated. At the start of the playoffs, all points were reset to zero. All races are two laps.

We have several house rules. The most notable one is that we do not roll for body in the straightaway. Instead, we score a body hit in the turn if the black die rolled is equal to or less than the number of stops in the turn (ie - 3 stop turn = hit on 1, 2 or 3). Body checks are made for all adjacent cars, including those that pull in front. We also add one to the body check roll in rain and for every space that is overshot.

We allow teams to construct their own cars, using 21 construction points. We do not use suspension rules. Both cars on a team must be constructed identically. Construction may change from race to race.

In addition to choice of tires, we allow drivers to choose whether to take downforce at the start of the race. This allows them to back up one space in the corners (if desired) and it shortens die rolls in 4th, 5th and 6th gear. (-1 for every roll in 4th gear, -2 for every roll in 5th and -4 for every 6th gear roll.) A car cannot use downforce to back up a spot and stay in the corner when it would have otherwise overshot. A car cannot use downforce if it applies a brake.

Qualifying is by die roll, but each team is guaranteed to have a car in one of the first five spots. Upon pitting, a team may elect to take a long pit rather than try for a short pit. If he does so, he may restore one point of his choice, in addition to the tires. Pits are chosen by teams in reverse qualifying order.

Points are awarded to the top eight finishers.

In addition to championship points, drivers earn "Driver Points (DP)" One driver point allows a car to reroll one die, one time. The top three finishers at each race earn a full Driver Point. Any car that crosses the finish line behind them earns 0.5 DPs. Cars that DNF receive zero. Teams may also build one DP into their car at the cost of two construction points. Once the playoffs begin, all Driver Points are reset to zero.

COMMENTS
Goo and Avanti select hard tires and no downforce. USA and Sluggy Freelance have soft tires and no downforce. Chameleon has one car (Phillips) with hard tires, no downforce. His back car (Kravinoffi) has soft tires and downforce.

Spencer (USA) gets lucky and rolls a fast start!

Fortunato's (Avanti) first three rolls are 1-3-4 and he starts to fall back, as the soft tire cars continue to move up.

Spencer (USA) moves into the first turn in 3rd gear. Gelatino (Goo) comes up just short and can't draft in. All the other cars stop short. Wait! Bobbie Phillips (Chameleon) - from the middle of the pack - DOUBLE DRAFTS into the turn!

Spencer (USA) rolls 4th gear for his second stop and prepares to go to 5th gear. Phillips (Chameleon) slows to third gear.

Fortunato (Avanti) jams into the crowded first turn and has to burn 3 brakes. Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls a 15 to pull right inot one of the two open spots. Kravinoff (Chameleon) and Kiki (SF) are short.

After making his third stop in Turn 1 in 5th gear, Spencer (USA) gears to 6th and rolls a 29 to make Turn 2. Phillips (Chameleon) can't keep up.

Both of Avanti's cars make their third stops in Turn 1 in 5th gear. All other cars in that pack have to select 4th gear. (Avanti is taking some risks in the early going.)

Spencer (USA) gears down to 5th and rolls an 11, well short of Turn 3. He was afraid of overshooting.

Phillips (Chameleon) rolls 5th into Turn 2. Tank Girl (USA) is short in 5th gear. Gelatino (Goo) goes to 4th. Fortunato (Avanti) makes Turn 2 in 6th gear. Bun-Bun (SF) is short in 5th. Viscous (Goo) is short in 5th. Di Veloce (Avanti) is short in 6th gear. Kiki (SF) and Kravinoff (Chameleon) make thier final stops in Turn 1.

Phillips (Chameleon) nails Turn 4 with a 9. Spencer (USA) gets in with an 11. Fortunato (Avanti) goes deep with an 18 on the inside. He'll be slowing down for the second stop.

Bun-Bun (SF) misses Turn 3. Viscous (Goo) makes it. Di Veloce (Avanti) overshoots by one in 6th gear. Tank Girl (USA) is short. Meanwhile, Kravinoff (Chameleon), Gelatino (Goo) and Kiki (SF) all make Turn 2.

Fortunato (Avanti) rolls 4th gear and gets an 11, overshooting the second stop of Turn 4 by four spaces. So much for slowing down. Spencer (USA) rolls 4th gear and safely makes his second stop. Phillips (Chameleon) gears up to 5th and gets a 14, which is perfect.

Di Veloce (Avanti) pulls into Turn 4 with an 8 and is thankful he overshot the last turn by 1. Viscous (Goo) makes Turn 4 also. Bun-Bun (SF) pulls into Turn 3. Tank Girl (USA) rolls 4th and is lucky to get a 12 and make the turn. Kravinoff (Chameleon), Gelatino (Goo) and Kiki (SF) all make the turn.

There are now three packs of cars, with Fortunato (Avanti), Phillips (Chameleon) and Spencer (USA) up front. Viscous (Goo) and Di Veloce (Avanti) are in the middle. The rest of the pack trails.

Fortunato (Avanti) rolls a 16 and stops 10 shy of the 3-stop turn. Phillips (Chameleon) debates and finally rolls 6th gear and gets a 21 to go 2 ahead of Fortunato. Spencer (USA) rolls a 14.

Both Viscous (Goo) and Di Veloce (Avanti) roll 5th gear for their second stop, giving them a slight chance of making the next turn.

Bun-Bun (SF) is short of Turn 4. Tank Girl drafts in off of him. Kiki (SF) gets in and blocks the turn for both Kravinoff (Chameleon) and Gelatino (Goo).

Viscous' (Goo) 6th gear try comes up short. Di Veloce (Avanti) can no longer make it in 6th, so he rolls 5th and finds himself in no-man's land, between gears for the next roll.

Tank Girl (USA) and Kiki (SF) make their second stops in Turn 4, while the other three cars all make their first stops.

Spencer (USA) gears down to 3rd for his second stop in Turn 5, as does Fortunato (Avanti). Phillips (Chameleon) stays in 4th gear and gets a 12, pulling up just behind Spencer.

Viscous (Goo) goes fairly deep for his first stop in Turn 5. Di Veloce (Avanti) takes a big risk and goes 6th gear- getting a 21 and going just 3 spaces into the turn!
