Mom and dad and three boys--6, 9, and 14.

Looking for something light and fun and exciting for the five of us. Something where we all laugh and that all of the different ages will enjoy.

King of Tokyo should be spot on.

Carcassonne could also do, a great classic, but not exactly what you were askig for, more thinky.

There are some great games in this category. Here are a few that leap to mind:

Survive - Escape from Atlantis (may be too cut throat though)

Forbidden Desert (cheap, fun, accessible co-op)

Castle Panic (another coop - lots of fun)

Bang! The Dice Game (perhaps too violent?)

+1 King of Tokyo

I just discovered Suspend, and it is a fantastic light family game. I would describe it as "reverse Jenga," and it is a lot of fun. I think it is technically for 4 people, but you could just put the peices in one pile and pick by rolling the dice from that communal pile with play until it crashes.

Another more active game is Bounce-off: Rock n' Rollz, which can be played without the rocking feature to begin with.

Games like Balderdash and The Game of Baloney are fun light games if your youngest can read/write.

My absolute favorite family game is The aMAZEing Labyrinth, but it is technically for 4 people. You can definitely add another player with your own pawn and just share a start/end spot. You can also try my "There's a Minotaur in the Labyrinth!" game variation for a new monster character (look in the forum and file sections on the Labyrinth page).

Another fun lightweight puzzle-like game is Tsuro of the Seas, I recommend playing without the sea monsters first (but definitely recommend this over the original because you can eventually play with the monsters when ready).

Mysterium could be a fun one. It is very visual, and can be played either using abstract thinking or literal thinking - as the ghost you can play to your audience which makes it great for a range of people.

+1 King of Tokyo.

Mysterium will be difficult for the 6-year old due to the subtlety.

+1 for Forbidden Desert
+1 for King of Tokyo
+1 for Ticket to Ride (I'd suggest either Ticket to Ride: Europe or the base game plus Ticket to Ride: USA 1910, for longevity)

+1 for Carcassonne maybe -- your 6-year-old may be a little bored by it, unless he enjoys solving puzzles

Also a lot of fun:
Apples to Apples (we have enjoyed the Disney Apples to Apples version)
Jaipur
Pit (a very noisy time)
Qwirkle
Sushi Go!

Good hunting! Let us know how it goes; and write back every year or two--there's a lot more out there!

Meeple Circus is fabulous, light, lots of fun and exciting. IF(!) your boys can live with the fact that sometimes they will screw up their show totally. If they are easily frustrated it might problematic, but in my opinnion this game is more about playing and having fun than about winning. Just watch some playthroughs

+1 for King of Tokyo
