Very good chance this is my first Lacerda game ...

Me too. The themes of his other releases just never appealed to me; although, I was tempted by CO2 until I heard how harsh and unforgiving an experience it could be. So here's hoping for 'On Mars.'

Hi,

Just be aware that "harsh and unforgiving" is kind of Vital's trademark.

Agree. I love how much his games reward excellent planning and building up what feels like “move combos”. That is, where taking an action gives a bonus, and the bonus triggers a bonus, which gives another action, which ... etc.

But on the other side of that coin, if you can’t make 5-6 strategic cogs turn together you likely won’t win and may in fact have a bad time. Probably because you’re stuck with no currency.

I kindly disagree. To me (I've only played The Gallerist and Lisboa, mind) Lacerda games are the jazz of boardgames. You can't sit and plan 5 moves ahead because the board state changes too much after each players turn. You need to keep an eye on the big picture and have some clear wants, for sure. But in the end I find that each turn is where it happens.

What is the most beneficial move right now to help me towards what I really, really want down the line.

Oooppps, someone snatched that piece of land, Oh snap... the boat is gone... Oh noes... I wanted that artist! Huh? No VIP's for my gallery? Shit, I can't sell 3D art! etc etc

As opposed to Scythe where you really need to oil up your machinery so it tick-tocks like clockwork.

I do agree that you need to know what you want, you can't jump from one foot to the other. Maybe we mean the same thing but call it different names.

Yeah, I think the point is that they hit a nice sweet spot where strategic forward planning and tactical flexibility are both very important, which to me is a nice balance to be able to achieve. I like games where I have to plan ahead but at the same time if after I make a plan I'm just going through the motions because nothing can change then that's no fun either.

I favor Euros, but I like pretty much all games.

I was more referring to putting yourself in the best possible position to get bonuses and extra actions. I’ve definitely had turns in The Gallerist that felt like 3-4 regular turns.

I'm throwing money at my cellphone and pull my creditcard in it but nothing happens. Wish that I can pledge today!

When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

The day after I get back from Europe! Seems appropriate!

Per an email I received yesterday, I'm also bundling shipping of Railways of Portugal with On Mars.

^^THIS! I've had the pleasure of teaching a couple play groups Lisboa and Vinhos this year. I always say multiple times during the teach something to the effect of "your strategy IS your tactics," i.e. in Lacerda games, your strategy should be to build a long term strategy based on tactical flexibility. The JAZZ!

I'm confused, why is the length of the campaign important?

I always think the longer the better. Most here get paid monthly, so a longer campaign is more likely to go across a pay day.

Long campaigns have huge dead periods in the middle so the trend appears to be shifting to the shorter 15 day campaigns. I'm guessing publishers aren't seeing much of a difference in total funding by going to shorter campaigns.

Well I guess we’ll never know, although E.G. has never been late on Vitals KS, either. So it definitely can’t hurt

It has, when the warehouse in China burned with all the copies of Lisboa headed to EU...
