This is prompted by this thread (Share with us some games you like & some you dont). I'm not sure if I'm more angry that people create threads which just ask people to make a list of games, or at the people who only post a list of games and nothing
else. For Pete's sake, say something about the games. Say why you like them. Or why you don't. Anything!

I can't sit there and just read list after list of game titles with no commentary. I might as well read a list of random games from the top 500. There's only so many times you can say to yourself "Yup, I agree with that choice" or "I disagree with that one" before it just stops being interesting. Slogging through those posts is a chore.

I always think that those threads will be interesting, and admittedly a few of the posts are, but mainly it's just people regurgitating game names. Ugh!

There's nothing interesting in knowing that Bob, Jim and Doug (none of whom I know or know anything about) dislike Terraforming Mars. Or that Jim and Doug like Powergrid, but Bob doesn't. Just hearing a random stranger's preferences isn't inherently interesting. But discussing why they don't like something, and digging into what a game offers in value or why it doesn't work is interesting. Because that ties into my own ideas about the game and leads to interesting discussions about what games "should" do and how a game succeeds or fails.

Why not just not read these types of lists instead of slogging through them?

Why on earth are you even reading those threads? You know you won't get anything out of them.

I'd like to register a complaint about people who complain about problems entirely of their own creation.

In that vein, I sometimes wish I could tell the BGG subscriptions to ignore certain bloggers. I don't particularly mind the "what I played this week" posts that hit my subscription when they have something substantial to say about the game or how it played out. However, there are a few bloggers that simply list their plays without any significant comment and I get tired of them pinging my subscriptions. A few of them I have memorized by the name of the blog so I can just mark them read without having to open them, but still, it would be nice if I never had to see them in the first place.

Because I keep hoping that they'll be interesting. And occasionally people do post something interesting that's worth reading... but I typically have to scroll through a page of posts that are just lists of games for every post worth reading.

I think you're looking for /r/boardgames.

They filter threads religiously there. I like both communities, but I'd prefer BGG be its own thing. Plus it's more massive thus harder to filter.

Eh, I'd just be happy if those threads included a phrase like "Tell us what you like or don't like about a game!" instead of just calling for a list.

You can - just block the ones you don't want to see any more (in the drop-down list next to the subsribe/unsubscribe link).

I've tried doing that a couple of times but it hasn't stopped them from coming through. Either the feature doesn't work or I'm doing it wrong.

Personally, I find Bob's views intriguing and would like to subscribe to his newsletter.

Jim and Doug on the other hand are obviously unwashed troglodytes.

You are not doing it right. They are in the wrong order.

Agricola is a game I have played
Puerto Rico is a game I haven't played
Splendor is a game I have played that I wish I hadn't played

How's that?
