Hi everyone,

I'm hoping you can help with some suggestions for a game for my son & daughter-in-law. They have a a young child & another on the way, so quick playing games are best. My son gets bored if he has to wait between turns, so player interaction, or something to do between turns would be great. I have a few games that we've tried - some worked & some were a bust. Usually we play with 3 people, but occasionally 2 or sometimes 4-6.

The best we've played so far is Kingdomino - fast play and someone can get the next tiles in order between turns.
Codenames, when there are enough of us to play was good.
Rummikub is another that worked since you have to pay attention to what others are laying down.
Spot-it is always a favorite.

What hasn't worked -
King of Tokyo - Boredom between rounds
Forbidden Desert & Pandemic - Didn't like Coop, want to play to win
Ticket to Ride - too long to play, toddler got impatient

Thanks for any suggestions you can give.

I did a search for 2-6 player games, non-coop, 2.0 weight or less. Here's the results.

Hope it helps.

Sounds like abstracts could work well. Two of the best are Azul and Sagrada.

During play when it isn't your turn you are moving the scoring markers And Or watching how the other player's move is going to affect your next move

Something like Tiny Epic Galaxies with a follow mechanic (that lets players take actions on other players turns, i.e. following their action)

Pickomino is perfect for this!
Las Vegas and Port Royal are other great options. All three play in around 15-20 minutes, have virtually no setup and are addictively fun!

If you like Codenames but sometimes don't have enough people then Codenames Duet is a slam dunk. Cooperative (I know you said no co-op but maybe this is an exception), designed for two players but works well with more. With 6 people I'd play Codenames, with 2 - 5 I'd play Duet. Edit to add: a common complaint with Codenames is downtime. Duet solves this neatly as you can always be coming up with your next clue(s) while the other person comes up with theirs.

Port Royal is a tableau-building push-your-luck/engine-building card game that works great for 3 - 5 players and everyone is actively interested on every turn (really no downtime). (Ah, just see the comment above mine said this, too, so +1... but I'd say the playtime is more like 30 minutes or so).

Las Vegas, which was mentioned upthread, is a good choice.

You might try some card-driven games that play relatively fast or that can be paused without issues. You might look at:

Get the MacGuffin (up to 11 players and great fun);
Spy Tricks;
Fab Fib;
Medici: The Card Game; or
Fabled Fruit.

And Lanterns: The Harvest Festival and Century: Spice Road are always favorites.

Trust this is useful!

Good luck!
