A friend of mine has asked me for suggestions of gateway games for his kids. He has a 9 year old boy and a (quite smart) 7 year old girl. Neither of them are into board games right now. Can you help? Thanks in advance.

I think the new version of Stop Thief! by Restoration Games is a good one for this purpose. The app integration usually helps to convince kids who prefer video games to give it a try. Also, it has a new Co-op mode, so you can play it together or competitively depending on what the kids prefer. Both play modes are quite good.

I started playing Chess when I was seven.

It has the advantage of having enough cultural recognition that if you take it to school while obsessing over it the teacher who has to confiscate it will probably give it back after the school day.

Unlike my friends' card games.
