What's your hidden gem of a war game that you love, but people don't know about, but should?

One of my favorite card games and one of my favorite ancients games, and almost wholly overlooked despite the designer's pedigree.

Outstanding asymmetric design that shows attrition and maneuver well.

Surprisingly good early naval warfare game.

I will also add this one from a smaller publisher that people might not have exposure to--

Very well conceived solitaire game that integrates politics and military and generates a great narrative.

Miniature Market has both, and show plenty in stock. Liberty Road was their deal of the day last month.

One of the few decent games from Osprey whose boardgaming output has included some absolute shockers.

Only the miniature rules are published by Osprey.
The OP is referring to the card game adaption which Martin Wallace published under his own Treefrog banner...

Agree on the Osprey verdict though.

that has rewritten them, the game can now fully show its potential. It makes for a great solitaire experience and the AI that moves the NVA is really well suited to deliver a credible experience.

Another one is Operation Pointblank: Strategic Bombing Campaign Feb-Dec 1944. A Japanese game by Yasushi Nakaguro that plays fast but is full of meaningful decisions. If you enjoyed Pacific Fury: Guadalcanal, 1942, you will like this one as well.

Not all of these are true wargames, but still interesting. Some that pop into my mind:

Barbarian, Kingdom and Empire - Great mechanism of wild tribesmen forming ordered kingdoms, followed by corrupt empires that then fall to the barbarians again.

Scandinavia - Economics, politics, war in a fantastical setting

Battle of the Halji - One of the weirdest games I own

Konradin oder Interregnum - You ever wanted to feel the pain of waging dark Ages warfare, this is for you...

Saladin - A major labor of love, huge scope and playtime

Promised Land - Part Britannia, part History of the World

Gladiator - Great man-to-man in the Roman arena

Rus' - Britannia in Russia. Some imbalance but great fun.

Kriegbot - Machine vs machine from Sierra Madre

Lords of the Middle Sea - Conflict over a submerged North American continent

This Geeklist is of people's low/medium complexity wargames with low geek ratings, which is kind of similar:

Fighting Sail: Sea Combat in the Age of Canvas and Shot 1775-1815

No questions about it If you have the slightest interest in the Age of Sail, you'll find a true 8-directions movement (square-grid > hexes, here), a clever combat system with a smooth discrimination between ships of the same rate, and a creative impulse-based turn structure full of tension.

Even if the game may look "modest" in scope (that's a magazine game), I dare to say that it has the potential to oust even Wooden Ships & Iron Men as "the one"! Don't miss it if you can!

I believe these are being reworked/redesigned.

A solid entry into the Strategic Vietnam War category:

It is manageable and playable. Also contains rules for invading the North, Chinese/Soviet intervention, invasions of Laos/Cambodia, etc. A lot of punch in a small package.

Where did you hear that? Additional theaters makes sense. Not sure what was wrong if anything. Perhaps clarity with the rules?

Most likely because it's not a wargame. Wallace does a lot of military games, but I would struggle to label AuZtralia as one.
