Im looking for a medium weight game that can play up to 5 with relatively quick turns. I have some newer gamers in my group prone to AP and getting lost in wait times.

Could you give us a little more info?

What's your ideal playtime? How competitive? Gotta be a coop? Like negotiation? Like abstracts?

Here's a good place to start: https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/224746/item/5379888#item5...

But without knowing anything more, I'd say go with Cyclades

Hello,

I would go with Ethnos.

Simple, quick turns, with some set collecting and fun.

Take care,

Endeavor: Age of Sail

Looking at the rules and the components, you would think this one is prone to AP, but rather it's fairly evident exactly what you should do when your turn comes around.

Concordia ~ There's always something changing on the 5P Mediterranean board. So moves can be fairly tactical, selecting from the 1 or 2 best cards in your hand. If you get 4P or 6P try Concordia Venus where players team in pairs.

Architects of the West Kingdom
The Godfather: Corleone's Empire
Archaeology: The New Expedition (not really medium weight but still very good)
Fantasy Realms (not really medium weight but still very good)
New Frontiers (turns aren't fast per se, but you're involved on nearly everyone's turn)
Viticulture Essential Edition

With expansions
Raiders of the North Sea
Champions of Midgard
Blood Rage

I played Architects of the west kingdom this evening and in terms of short players turns vs. decent complexity of paths to take, I'd say it should be ideal. Turns seem to take 5-20 seconds in general. Enough depth for those that seek it, enough simplicity for those that don't.

Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra
The Quacks of Quedlinburg

All good picks with very different feels. Also a huge +1 for Endeavor: Age of Sail. We learned it in a rush and I was blown away with how streamlined and good it was.

Erm, both Quacks and Azul only play up to 4.

Medium weight? Tricky to know what you are thinking of with just that to go on.

The following might skew a little light, but if you want to avoid AP you kinda need games with minimal fluff so that people dont start drowning in options.

Stockpile - good stock-trading game with a nice and swingy market.
Mission: Red Planet (Second Edition) - Simultaneous action selection game of area control.
Key Flow - A crunchy Euro game but done with simultaneous drafting, so almost no downtime. Its the only 'Key' game I enjoy playing.
Alicematic Heroes - Bit of an odd one this. The theme can put some off (its anime) but its a smartly designed area-majority game with tableau-building. Plays 5 and turns are pretty quick.
Asking for Trobils - A very light worker-placement game that nonetheless is interesting enough to be fun for people who play much more complex Euros. Players only have one action per turn, so it tends to whip around the table pretty quick.
Ethnos - Already mentioned. Still excellent.
Lords of Xidit - Simultaneously program your actions for the turn, then carry them out, moving around the board collecting people and using them to defeat monsters.
The King's Guild - Very straightforward Euro, but still quite fun. Somewhat inspired by Splendor. Plays up to 6, though it can have moments of AP.
Kings of Air and Steam - Probably not easy to find these days. Pick-up-and-deliver game where you partially program your 4 actions each turn. Just about manages its max count of 7, but 5 players is no problem at all.

+1 to Concordia. I also find Steampunk Rally to have very little downtime since most of your actions are taken simultaneously.

Mini Rails fast turns. you do one of 2 things every turn. You either BUILD or INVEST. once you do one, you have to do the other next turn.

but it is brutal in decision, so even though its potential for fast turns, may not help with overly-AP prone players.

Wallenstein (second edition) is my favorite 5 player game, and the turns actually take a little bit to do... but they are simultaneous so the length of a turn is REALLY divided by 5! (and its a great hybrid euro/wargame)

Lots of great new game suggestions. Some great games from the not so distant past that play best with 5:

El Grande is simply one of the greats. fast turn.

The Princes of Florence also a thing of beauty. Auction game so constantly involved.

Power Grid plays quite well with 5.

Tribune: Primus Inter Pares also very good with 5.

Just making sure some of these oldies aren't forgotten...

Plays very quick, but can have player elimination if people get cocky.

I would agree that Istanbul is your best option for a 5-player game with quick turns. Actions felt so intuitive.

Can't think of any other games that wouldn't trigger AP, though.

In the Year of the Dragon - very good at 4-5, very quick game too, I have seen it played in 75 minutes. You have only two decisions each month/turn (of which there are 12) - what action to select and which recruit will I hire and that is it! Plenty of tension.

+1 for Concordia - very tight Euro game but your turn exists of playing just one card. Usually you have worked out 2 to 3 cards that are to be played in the next turns so it doesn't take long.

Also checkout Mare Nostrum: Empires it is perfect at 5. In fact I wouldn't play it at a lower player count. Multi paths to victory and has a bit of everything (some Euro management, area control, asymmetry, combat etc).

Libertalia is a great game at 5 players. Simultaneous action selection means the games usually plays the same time at all player counts. Quite similar to Mission Red Planet mentioned earlier. You might get a little AP with new players but I have found it only takes a few turns to get into the swing of things.
