Decided to make a smaller board so that Firefly: The Game wouldn't be quite such a table hog.

Perfect for solo play. I’m going to have to make one of these myself.

Did you print and mount it yourself or have a "pro" do it for you?

You could also further reduce your tabletop footprint by using business card holders or some of the other options people have come up with for holding the various decks and their discard piles.

You could use one 6-slot cardholder for the Supply decks and one for the Contact decks (using one slot to hold both the deck and the corresponding discard pile, with one in the Portrait orientation and one in the Landscape). Then have another 6-slot holder for the two Nav decks and the Misbehave deck (with this one, you could have separate slots for the decks and their discard piles)

Good ideas. Also using a notepad for accounting vs the cash.

Is it just done on regular printer paper and matte board?

To me, making the board smaller and removing the miniatures loses charm. The 'verse is large and should be imposing!
However, this is a cool idea at modification. You can save even more table-space by using business card holders for the many decks. You essentially fit 4 decks in the space of 2 AND can store other components underneath them.
