There is a level 2 excommunication tile that means you always place your first worker last. We drew it for the first time in a 2 player game but felt it was pointless as it has little impact for 2 reasons. If you both don't get it or both get it, it negates the effect. If one person gets excommunicated it basically means both players then can ignore the starting player slot. Also going second in a 2 player game is too bad.

We can see what a difference it makes in a higher player count but Would consider removing it if drawn in my next 2 player game as a house rule.

Any thoughts? Have we missed something?

I ran into this issue a couple of days ago. The way we played this is that if Player A is excommunicated and Player B is not than if Player B has first position, that player gets to play two family members before Player A can play. If Player A takes first position, Player B still gets to play one family member and then Player B gets to play.

If both players get excommunicated then game play is as if no players were excommunicated.

I can see worth using it in 2 players. If only one person gets it then they receive 2 turns in a row if they go first each round.

This upside, for me, negates its mutual downside if both do or do not meet the pope's demands.

I like the house rule Ben proposed. Or... either taking that tile out with 2 players. Either of those options would "fix" the issue very nicely.

I'm also thinking using a similar variant Rhado suggested - in regards to harvesting/producing. Rather than having those spots blocked off COMPLETELY maybe increase the penalty to [-4 pips] or [-3 pips and -3 money] for a 2 player game. I think either of those variants might also work better.
