I see some powers that give like 10+ defense. Isn't this unnecessary since blight will always just be 1 blight to that land if its 2+ damage without defense, not including cascade?

So if invaders deal 10 damage, you only get 1 more blight in that land, and 1 cascade every ravage if there is already a blight there, or do you give 1 blight for every 2 damage, and 1 cascade for every blight already there? If not, are the really high defense power cards a bit excessive the majority of the time?

You are correct that only 1 blight is added no matter how much damage is done to the land.

Large amounts of defend are overkill for small ravages, but if invaders are going to do 11 damage, you need at least 10 defense to avoid a blight.

Also, even if you can't stop a blight, more defense can still be better because you might save more Dahan from destruction. If the invaders are doing 6 damage (and have 6 health) and you have 4 Dahan in the land, Defend 4 will save enough Dahan to do 6 damage and wipe out the invaders, but no defense will leave only 1 Dahan to retaliate.

It's like Lorkenpeist said. This is in the Rules semi-commonly misplayed from the Living FAQ.

You get one blight if you ignore any ravage, and a cascade if you already had blight there, but you typically want zero blight. So you're trying to reduce the invaders' attack to 0 or 1.

Depending on how you play it isn't so farfetched to see a land with 2 cities, 3 towns, 5 explorers towards the endgame. That's 17 damage. So you need at least 16 defense in that land to "negate" the ravage - 10 isn't even enough. Now that 20 defense power makes a little more sense. If this is the last land with cities in the game and you're at terror level 3, you just want to do 6 damage to win. Maybe you can get 3-4 Dahan there, but you still need to defend 16-14 (respectively) to keep enough of them alive to win on the counterattack. These high-defense powers are usually Major powers, meaning they're intended to be used against late-game bastions of Invader power.

If the invaders do 30 damage it will usually only do 1 blight however it doesn't take many single blights to lose you the game so therefore you often want to put up defence in order to stop any blight. Not only that though if there is already blight in the land then the blight will cascade so it may end up adding 2,3 or even more blight to the board.

Also note Sweden will do 2 blight if damage is over 6 which gives even more incentive to defend.

It's worth noting that the Sweden adversary has the potential to cause 2 blight, but this is the exception to the standard rule.

This is also the reason that blight removal is such a great defensive tactic. Let a land ravage for 15 damage. Then fix it with one card. In fact, shovel more and more invaders into that land and keep doing that. Draw a blight removal card early, and if you have good invader movement exploit that card by pushing invaders into a targetable land you can just fix.
