This past week, we got Valeria: Card Kingdoms - Shadowvale in the mail and we wasted no time getting it onto the table. Instead of mixing the expansion in, we played with all parts of the new and here is what we found...

Mechanically, the game moves forward in relatively the same manor. The major difference, of course, is the relics. We found that two of the relics used by the team were very good and the other two moderately helpful. We do worry a little that these may slightly unbalance the game, but overall we felt it was a good addition.

It was clear the Citizens and Domains had some new abilities as well. The Slay ability on the Dragoon being the favorite. My son, who won, triggered the Dragoon several times where I did not and we believe that this gave him the win. (having extra opportunities to defeat monsters (get rewards and VPs) is a very good thing). Similar surprises were found in the domains.

The artwork is of the same excellent quality. We've always felt that some was excellent and others just good, but that is a function of personal taste. Overall, there is no drop in the quality of the Art and this continues to allow Card Kingdoms to expand seamlessly.

We really enjoyed the new monster types as well. With Werewolves, Vampires and other 'classic' monsters found within, we enjoyed the darker ambiance.

Overall, the game went smoothly and we enjoyed every new card we used, including some of the new events. We are very much looking toward merging the game with the base cards and coming up with new card mixes to try. We even discussed some creative ways to mix the game up to include merging a certain number together (say all the 1's) and randomly choosing the same number of cards that should be in the stack. Then, as each card appears, there will be possibly different options at that number. (and frankly if we do it for one number we'd do it for all)

Overall, put our group solidly in the camp of enjoying this expansion a great deal. Fresh art, new abilities, interwoven into a solid game that remains one of our favorites.

Played with just the Shadowvale cards on Sunday, and thought it went swimmingly.
