Looking for something with some kind of Variable player powers, maybe roll and write, maybe card game. Mainly for two, but okay if it has more too. Fleet Dice Game looked good but isn't out yet, along those lines. Building things is a big plus, having something to show at the end win or lose. Have Railroad Ink already on order.

Help!

Maybe check out Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age? Only the box is medium sized and a bit heavy.. But I don't know if that is what you meant in lines of small.
Anyway I play with 2 players most of the time.

Citadels has variable player powers (well, you choose different ones each round) and building stuff, but I don't know how well it works with two players, as I've mostly played it with 4+.

I've enjoyed these, hopefully they are helpful for you;

Battle Line- Two player card game fits in a deck box

Deep Sea Adventure - Really small press your luck game that plays 2-6 although probably best at 3+

The Game - Simple coop card game that plays 1-5

Knaves - Three(or 17 if you are frisky) player trick taking game played with a regular deck of cards.

Harbour - 1-4 Worker placement game

Fleet - Might be cheating to include this but it's box isn't too big and I have fun with it, although it's not been great at two.

Decathlon - Print and play dice chucker that plays 1-4

Not a heavy game by any means but Pagoda seems to tick your boxes:
- Variable player powers (you gain short-term abilities based on colors you construct with)
- Card-based, but has a small board you build on and some components (still a small table presence)
- 2-player only
- Building things (you construct 3D pagodas)
