For the past six months or so I've occasionally heard a song in the gym. I'm not even sure how much I like it, but it's unusual enough to be memorable. I have no idea what it is called and it is driving me nuts.

Here's what is unusual: it has a lot of strings, but they are played for very short bursts, it ends up almost taking the place of a piano or something. The rhythm isn't 4/4 quite, more like best..beatbeatbeat....beat....beat..beatbeatbeatbeat.... Etc., Where each beat is a single note from the violins.

Anybody able to help out?

All good answers! But not quite. The violin sound is ever more staccato in the song I'm thinking of, so much so that I suspect that it may be electronically introduced (or maybe not a violin in the first place?)

I wish I had shazam but I always leave my phone in a cubby when I climb at the gym.

Supposedly SoundHound will recognize a song that you hum.

I'll try it, I had the tune in my head when I first posted, but now every time I try to imagine it I hear "Viva la Vida" instead. Grrrr.

Are the strings playing the same note, or a melody?

Did you pick up on any lyrics (if there are any)? If so, you could check https://genius.com.

The strings are definitely in a melody. And I don't remember any lyrics. But dammit, I can't remember the melody now...see my previous post. Funny how one song can completely drive another out of your head.

There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night, and if you go no one may follow, that path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed, nor wind to blow.

I highly doubt they would play this at a gym, but it made me listen to one of my favorite string pieces by Bach, Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major.

That's a nice piece, but totally unlike what I heard in the gym - that's strings used as strings, rather than strings as rhythm.

What genre? (rock, pop, dance, other)
What tempo is it? (fast/slow)
Even if you can't remember any lyrics, are there actual lyrics or is it instrumental?

Is it "Your Woman" by White Town? The strings figure repeats a lot, and is sort of staccato, and sort of syncopated.

But, you probably would've mentioned the Imperial March melody...

Nope.

It's the one defining thing of the song. The strings are REALLY staccato. It's the only thing about the song that stood out - so unless you hear definite quick short bursts of violin-like sound, that isn't it!

There were lyrics. I think a female singer. Tempo was medium. Don't recall any lyrics. I'll have to hope I hear it again. When I was at the gym on Sunday they were playing 80's music instead so I didn't hear it.

Got it. They played it tonight and I had time to get out my phone and run shazam.

First, it's only in the beginning that it is just strings doing the pulses; through most of the song, the strings are joined by horns. Second, I see it's a pretty old song, at least 5 years old. But here it is:

Now that I've heard it when I wasn't distracted...I like the parts I remember. The long echoey mumbling from the singer, I could have done without that. Still, at least I know what song it is now.
