Four showed for play of Richthofen's War (AH) today (Dan K., Chris D., Vincent S., Ryan S.) and we got in two scenarios using the simove variant from the Avalon Hill General. This variant, though short in length, brings a welcome change from the game's original alternating move and fire sequence to a richer plot and simultaneous move play sequence. Highly recommended.

First scenario was a three plane British trench photo recce mission (two Neuport 17s, one Fe2) intercepted by two German fighters (Albatross DIII's) over no man's land. The German's flamed the camera carrying Fe2 but at the cost of over 50% damage to both Albatrosses. The two Neuports were largely untouched. A tactical German win but a promising start at attrition for the British if playing the campaign game.

Second scenario was a balloon busting mission with two British Spad 13s going after a German observation balloon with ground MG and AA defenses and two Albatross DV's on near by patrol. The Spad 13 is a fearsome fighting machine that outclasses the defending Albatross V's - the attacking Brits are faster, have an impressive dive capability, can take severe punishment while sporting two deadly front-facing Vickers machine guns. This quality difference showed in our game as the Spads put the balloon down in two passes and the German ground defenses failed to score a hit while the German fighters were playing positional catch up for most of the game. What a performance difference between the Neuport 17s and the Spad 13s!

This was a blast to play with four today - two of whom were military aviators. Their insight and comments were a tremendous add to the game's enjoyment for me.
