Good question. As far as I can tell, the rules don't actually specify for commodities.

The only thing specifically mentioned as hidden however, is money. Cards & building tiles are specifically listed as public.

Hopefully the designer will chime in to clarify.

From Page 11:

Quote:
INFORMATION
During the game, all cards and building tiles owned by the players
must be placed so that all players may see them (public information).
Each player’s money, on the other hand, is secret, and does not have to
be shared.

I think hidden money is great because it makes the auctions tense.

I like the fact that you can see other players commodities which makes the game more tactical, knowing who's in the market for X goods and judging the best time to sell before they do etc.

The only thing missing from the game is player boards to keep track of how many commodities you have, as we are always forgetting and going over.

As there is a limit in the number of commodities one can have, other players should be able to check if a player doesn’t exceed this limit. So I would say: no, you can’t hide them.

We don't hide our commodities. Knowing what other players have is a big part of the "production agony"...wanting to play a production card but knowing it will boost the price of another player's favourite commodity.

As for commodity boards, I give everybody an index card with ten numbered green squares (1-10) and six numbered red squares (1-6), and we put our commodities on the squares. It really is helping!

No, you can't hide your commodities. The building that lets you buy commodities from other players would be useless then.
You are only allowed to keep your money a secret.

While I agree with everyone that it was drastically change the game if commodities were hidden, and my initial thought was of course it can't be hidden!

I don't see it specified in the rulebook and find that kind of odd, since everything else is specifically listed as hidden or public.

I believe there is a mission rule card in the missions deck that specifies. I don't have it in front of me to quote it.

The instructional mission card states missions are kept hidden face down.
