Hi.

I am fairly new to the world of Board Games, but have booked up my trip to Essen this year. I decided to stay in Dusseldorf and get the train in for Saturday and possibly Sunday.

I was wondering if there is anyone else who may be going but staying in Dusseldor, who I might be able to link up with.

I will be staying in the Best Western Ambassador near the Hauptbahnhof.

I am coming from the Uk (flying from Stansted) and my german is very weak (even though my work colleague and gaming partner is German - he may join me at the show, but likely will not). I am not looking for someone who is good at German (although if you are, then thats a bonus!:-), I am confident of mucking through, I usually do when I visit the continent. Just someone to talk to and possibly play games with in the evening.

Thanks

Christopher

Hi Chris

I'm sorry I cannot help with the travelling companion of gaming partner stuff and we are all staying in Essen. However you shouldn't worry about Your German (or lack of it) as you will have no trouble finding English speakers. The most likely area of difficulty is taxi drivers who seem to be largely Turkish in this area of Germany. Good luck and I hope you find people to game with

Simon

if its not too late, you may wish to reconsider staying in essen itself as dusselorf is a good 40-45 minutes away by car (probably about the same by train), and if i am not mistaken, you will only arrive at the main station in essen, afterwhich you would still have to switch to the underground to get to the convention center.

alternatively, you may wish to rent a car and drive to essen? i would recommend this if you intent to buy a lot of games as it is packed during the weekends, and getting your boxes back to dusseldorf by underground, then train, would be very challenging!

you could get a rental car for no more than what it would cost you to take a taxi from dusseldorf to essen. plus you would save on the fare from the airport to town and back!

Greetings

Will arrive at Dusseldorf airport early saturday morning. Will directly go to the Essen fairground which should take about half an hour. Train connects to Essen Hauptbahnhof in 20-25 minutes and it's a short U-Bahn ride after that. (check www.messe-essen and www.bahn.de for further info) Will stay the Holiday Inn near Dusseldorf airport for the night since I have to leave on Sunday again.

Thanks everyone.

I am quite happy with staying in Dusseldorf. I reckoned it was going to be easier to find a reasonable room rate in Dusseldorf, plus if I don't go to the show on Sunday, Dusseldorf seems a nicer place to wander around than Essen. I'm cool with the travelling, I have an hour commute to work everyday as it is, and at least I won't be driving...let the train take the strain! and I'm also used to getting up early, so it'll be a snap for me to arrive for 10!!

I don't intend to buy many games..gotta fit it all into hand luggage, and I don't have the money really anyway...this is mostly a fact finding mission.

This is my first time. After I'll be in a better position to know what works best for me....and with some effort I may even come next year as an exhibitor...then travelling by car will be a must!

Enjoy the show all

Andre,

I will be staying in the town, and I have found someone else who may be around Dusseldorf saturday evening, so if you wanted to come into town, it'll be good to get a small group, if you are interested. Message me and maybe we can swap mobile numbers

Christopher,

that sounds great! Will drop luggage at the hotel after the show (planning on some loot) and then I am all in for some socialising - especially some gaming if we find a convenient spot!

Mobile No otw via pm...

Cheers, Andre

I too am staying in dusseldorf. Is anyone else worried that the BAHN will be closed bc of the strike. Anybody from germany know anything about that. What are the alternatives if the bahn is shut down.

Well if it is, then maybe we all share a taxi probably not much more expensive than the train.

I'll see what I can find out regarding train strikes in the area and get back to you.

It looks like they won't strike for another day without losing the majoritys support. So I do not think the railway strike will have any impact on next weekend.
