I've never heard that saying before. The one I'm familiar with is beer before liquor, never been sicker. Liquor before beer, nothing to fear.

And this one just makes sense. If you switch to a higher alcohol drink after your judgement is impaired, expect bad results. Conversely swapping to a 'safer' drink pater means 'just one more' has less impact.

In college up in Tennessee, the two I remember are:

"Beer then whisky*, pretty risky."

"Whisky before beer, in the clear."

or "whiskey", as you prefer

I've found that the best thing for preventing a hangover is to be young.

Take two ibuprofen before bed. Haven't had a hangover since.

Same here, but the last sentence was "liquor before beer, you're in the clear" when I heard it.

The only reason I think this has some truth to it is that once you get a buzz going and you're still drinking, you are likely to drink even more alcohol as inhibition drops. Since beer is lower abv you're likely not to consume quite as much total alcohol than if you're absentmindedly pounding back liquor beverages.

I totally disagree. When I was young I was stupid and often ended up with a hangover. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned how to drink enough to feel really good, but stop before I get sick or wake up hungover. Which leads to my personal motto:

Drinking is an art
Like everything else
I do it exceptionally well

It's not been relevant to me in many years but in college I seemed to just naturally not get any of the symptoms people described to me as a hangover. Instead I would the next day feel intensely thirsty and basically unable to drink enough water and I would physically recoil at the merest whiff of alcohol.

A couple drinks at night for me now makes me feel about as bad as I did when I was young and often drank until I passed out.

With me, it's "Beer? That's gross. Gin gimlet with thyme-infused simple syrup? Don't mind if I do."

Not quite as catchy, I admit.

Dude, you're killing my buzz. Stop it.

Preach!

Two glasses of Merlot and I'm snoring in my chair.

It's a German proverb:

"Wein auf Bier das rat ich dir, Bier auf Wein das lass sein"

(Wine after beer, that I recommend; beer after wine, let it be)

The real trick is to know a medic and get an saline solution injected - just make sure he's steady enough to stick you after all is said and done.

Random Off-Topic comment (of course):

My fist wife always said to drink a tall glass of milk before going to bed if you're drunk. She always did and never woke up sick or got sich through the night. The one time I did that I threw up within 10 minutes and was very hungover the next day.

Alcohol is not my strongest asset. Going to bed early on Saturday night is.
