I recently acquired via a Math Trade Battle of Lake Peipus. Having been interested in the campaigns of Alexander Nevsky, and am pleased with this effort.

But it made me start to think...I haven't seen many games which cover historical segments of pre-Petrine Russia (860-1700).

Does anyone know of other titles, other than the other Zvedza "Age of Battles" games, that cover this historical period?

Kinda curious game. I like both Britannia and Maharaja. So, I would certainly give Rus a chance.

Assuming I'll ever be able to lay my eyes on a copy...

Unfortunately Russia before 1812 is very neglected by the publishers, but it is a veery interesting historical period allowing good wargames. This is a pity as the history of this country interests me a lot (piotrveliki means Peter the Great)

Apart Rus

Thank you, Charles. I will certainly look into that copy of Against the Odds.

But none of the last 3 games deal with what I'm really looking for. While I acknowledge that there is a limited number of games dealing with The Northern War and the reign of Peter I, I'm looking for games covering the period before him (pre-Petrine Russia).

So, far, I'm up to 3 distinct titles, which is 2 more than I was aware of before posting this thread.

While Fire and Axe is not a detailed historical simulation, it does do a good job of protraying the expansion of the Vikings throughout Europe, including Russia. As was the case historically, the Viking emphasis in the east is more on trade than pillaging, as well as finding a route to the riches in Constantinople.

History of the World is one of my favorite games. It certainly covers a lot more than Russian history, but it does include a number of pre-1812 people who start off in what is today Russia.

I'd imagine there are quite a number of games about the 7 Years War that feature Russia as well.

I'd be pretty interested in Pre-Petrine Russia- I'd also be interested in Great Northern War game on the strategic level, maybe a CDG. However, I don't know of any games that fit the description.

Here's a few more. Some I remembered (Chinggis Khan, Holowczyn & Lesnaja) and the others I found by searching BGG for obvious terms ("Khan", "Mongol" & "Poltava").

(Off subject trivia question: there was a second battle of Poltava in the twentieth century. Guess which countries fought here. Answer at end. Hint: "Russia", "Ukraine", "Soviet Union" are all incorrect answers.)

Holowczyn - Battle of the Moscow Road

Lesnaja-September 29, 1708
AKA Lesnaja: The Mother of Poltava

Poltava

(Trivia answer: Germany and United States. The U.S. air force based at Poltava once during the Second World War. The Luftwaffe bombed the base, destroying many American aircraft but inflicting few casualties. The Soviet air force conspicuously did nothing to stop the Germans. Hence America abandoned the base.)

OK, let's review what's been suggested:

Peter the Great
On to Moscow
Catherine the Great
Holowczyn: Battle of the Moscow Road
Lesnaja: 'The Mother of Poltava' September 29, 1708
Poltava

The term "Pre-Petrine" refers to the Russian people, culture and nations BEFORE the reign of Peter Romanov (Peter I, "The Great"). These are all excluded for dealing with "modern" or "European" Russia.

Fire & Axe: A Viking Saga
History of the World
Khan: The Rise of the Mongols
Chinggis Khan: almidras Allah (the flail of God)

These games do not focus on Russia, which is my goal here. Chinggis Khan doesn't even deal with Russia, but is about the Mongol subjugation of Central Asia.

Hexostrategy: Invasion of Mongols

I had mentioned that I already have, and am aware of, the Age of Battles series, and am looking for a different rules set. I don't want to be "trapped" by a common set of rules.

Genghis Khan

I'm not particularly interested in a Do-It-Yourself boardgame. I hate putting together entertainment centers. But thanks for the suggestion.

That leaves a grand total of 2 games:

Rus' - Has the potential of being a decent light game.
Kulikovo 1380: The Golden Horde - This one looks like the most appealing of those suggested so far.

I'd love to see if more are out there.
