which do you consider the "better" game (subjective, of course). The BGG rankings are too close to call

two very different games for different needs, one is much heavier than the other

Agreed. Madeira is one of my all time favourite games, but it's damn hard to actually get it played.

Yeah, I've only played Madeira once, but was enamored with it. Just putting a feeler out on Nippon. Thoughts after reading some reviews I wouldn't call them "very" different, though that is also very subjective I understand

I love them both, I prefer Madeira (I love heavy games) but Nippon is an excellent game and a game that it's easier to ht the table because it's easier to explain and to grasp than Madeira

Madeira is so much better. And not a knock on Nippon which is a great game itself, Madeira is just that excellent comparison is unfair.

I assume you have the same poll in the Nippon forum? That way you can combine them. Clearly, this is the Madeira forum, so it will dominate.

No knock on Nippon but Madeira, easily. I owned both at one point. Enjoyed Nippon but it didn't connect with, or excite, me like Madeira does. Ended up selling it on. That will not happen with Madeira.

Exactly the same. Nippon is "fine". Madeira is awesome.

But yes, should also ask in Nippon forum for balanced input. But they're wrong.

Nippon is not a bad game. It has some interesting mechanics and it has this rare quality, this "addiction" factor that makes you want to play one game after the other, over and over. But when the game has little replay value, this is not such a good thing anymore. Definitely a game to try, but you'll have fun with it for 5 times, maybe.

Madeira will still be fun after 500 plays.

Read this short review from Nippon forums.

I give Madeira a slight edge too, but it seems like it's much closer for me than for most of you. Nippon's teaching 'footprint' is smaller and it's more approachable as a medium wight game, where Madeira scratches the deep planning urge just beautifully.

Can't I just keep playing them both?
