It was announced, not long after organized play kits being delivered for Wave 3, that the card Swap Parts will be banned in organized play. As a key component to the Specialist 'infinite combo' deck that developed towards the end of March/early April this year in social media postings.

I'm someone torn; I understand they want to maintain open design spaces and this card was going to be abused or at least crimp what they could print. But, I feel like they could have seen how it actually behaves in constructed events or in observed play instead of just playtesting "the deck" and banning it.

thoughts?

for reference, here is the posting of the decision:

Isn't banning cards a relatively common solution for problems in competitive TCGs? I suppose you're saying they should have waited and seen instead of pre-emptively banning though, right?

Yes it is and that tact is valid when you are dealing with so many variations and play combinations. As a player, I haven't seen it consistently be an issue and the ban seems very preemptive, as organized play isn't really a thing yet for the game. There is a dispersed community that is very active, so I guess they were thinking based on enough of those interactions it was warranted.

I don't even know what any local scenes look like. Are they out there beyond the Vector Sigma guys? I just play with my kids, I literally don't know any other players in my area (although I imagine they are there).

So sorry Patrick you haven't run into any other players in your area! My play experience is also with my kids, wife and friends. Everyone likes the game (rare in my family), so we aren't too concerned with the banning. My daughter's Dinobots deck was running 1 swap parts & she didn't even realize it! We swapped in a different card and it hasn't slowed down (she's 10-2 overall!)

I have a play group in Canton, OH & there is at least 2 other groups nearby me. Only a handful would be considered "competitive players". But there was enough of a vocal push for organized play (OP), so Wizards decided they needed to address the competitive balance of the environment & having an infinite combo deck pop up meant they took action. Still doesn't affect kitchen table/casual play, but we know its a possibility now by abusing Specialists & Swap Parts.

No worries at all, I haven't even looked to be honest (no time for anything like that now anyway). We just have fun with it, the two boys and me. Been watching A LOT of the shows on Tubi (free legal streaming). Boys are big fans and I missed most of G1 (a bit too young) so it's been fun to experience that together. Families, kids are great!
