We played our first game tonight, and my wife asked at one point whether she could choose the “pushed back” result instead of the “damage to both you and the enemy” result when she rolled higher than the threshold for both. She raised the point that with the student build, there is a talent that can change pushback into advance, which may be preferable to taking a damage even if you get to damage a creature too. We did not play that you could take the lower result, but it seems a valid question, especially if a melee hero has low health.

Nope. You get what you roll. You don't get to pick to not get stabbed in the ribs. your foe is quite keen on it happening!

What Josh said. You take the results of the roll (though certain talents can be used after rolling to change the outcome).

There is a certain amount of attrition built into the combat, so that it isn't endless swinging and missing. Some of the weapons (the staff for example) have Weapon Talents that allow you to change Trade Blows into Advance results or to reduce the damage you take from them.

Other weapons are more offensive with more damage dealing talents. All of the weapon talents have been designed around usage of those weapons, so each weapon should feel different in how its used and the outcomes you get.
