I remember that, and that's why I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that's a variant to make the game more difficult.

It's kinda both.

The official rules as provided in the box is that in solo you get 2 knowledge bumps per technology in a Summit. From earlier rule sets and during play testing, I gather from other posts here on BGG, that it used to be 1 per technology. Some still believe that is what you "should" gain for a proper challenge.


Vital has mentioned in the forums that anyone can easily house rule it to a single bump per technology as a way to increase the difficulty, if you so choose.
