This thread is for dicussion regarding the math trade announcement thread at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/218951

Please use this thread for dicussion of that thread... that announcement thread if for just that, announcements. Discussions there defeat the purpose and therefore will surely make it fail.

I don't think this will be as effective as you want it to be. Each Math Trade usually has its own discussion thread, and having them all in one big place will just make all of them more difficult to navigate. With these uber-Math Trades of 1500+ items going on, I expect it would get even worse.

Just a thought....

The above was actually posted over to the new math trade announcement thread.

Once again, please do NOT use that thread for anything but annoucements of new math trades. Clogging the thread up with discussion of whether it will work or not is a self furfilling profecy as folks will unsubscribe due to the noise level (ie. non-annoucements).

To answer your question, the point of the annoucement thread is to NOT replace the individual discussion threads for each math trade... it is only for announcing new math trades... the annoucement I would assume would including a pointer to either the math trade's geeklist and/or the math trade's own discussion thread.

Right, because people can't subscribe to a FORUM, but to a THREAD.

Got it. Sorry for the noise.

Your other option is to subscribe using the group's rss in an aggrigator, which is what I'm going to do.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geekforum.php3?action=rss&forum...=

Of course I had to build that link by myself since the XML button on the trade forum doesn't work. And you'll get everything, but it should be easy to weed through. It looks like it just gives you new threads, and not replies.

Is it appropriate to announce
1. no-ship math trades targeted to a local audience
2. no-ship math trades targeted to attendees of a convention or other event

in the global thread?

I would say yes, but I'd like to see consensus one way or the other...

Good question, and I'm not sure myself as arguments could be made on both sides, so will be curious what others think.

Re: Discussion thread regarding the Math Trade Annouce thread
Aliza - I'd say definately yes to each of your questions. The thread was created to announce mathtrades, and those are mathtrades. No ship or ship, all good.

Besides, that thread should have limited posts anyway since it's just for announcements. So a few extra posts a year that has a limited amount of interest to the greater masses shouldn't be a problem for people.

BTW Jeff, Good format for your sample post. It gets the important information out there in an easy to read format that people can quickly skim to see if they're interested or not.

You can actually thank Sterling for that, as well as for pretty'ing up the base post as well into a more readable format.

I'd like to see the format expanded by *one* line: A *one-line* description of any special feature of this math trade. Some examples:

Type: No-ship, BGG.CON, US, 2007-11-17
Type: Wargames and Kids games only
Type: Regional, Europe only
Type: No-ship, local deliveries around Portland, OR, US
Type: No-ship, Los Altos, CA, US, 2008-01-19
Type: Unrestricted
Type: Special, see discussion thread for details
Type: By request only, see discussion thread for details
Type: Regional, Canada only, further restrictions in discussion thread
Type: Unrestricted, trial of new TradeMax ESP features

Where a date will be specified only for no-ship math trades with a fixed date for handoffs, or for handoffs to happen at a specific event.

I realize that most of this information is sometimes in the trade name, but a tiny bit of clarity goes a long way.

I would say yes to both. The volume will still be very low.

Here, here! However, it might be wise to label it "Special Features" just to make it clearer what belongs in it without having to include a bunch of examples in the first posting.

Great idea and I hope it works. I actually had this idea in the back of my head when I was complaining about missing out on the oktoberfest math trade. This is one way to use the tools available to us to accomplish the same thing without waiting/wishing/hoping that Aldie will code in Math Trade notifications at some point.

Will only work, though, if people who run the math trades will bother to list them here as well.

Also, I've noticed that sometimes BGG will not send me a notification of new posts to a thread I've subscribed to. I'll check back on a given thread a couple days later and find a ton of posts that I missed somehow. Going to have to remember to check here occasionally to get my "last visit" reset. Any chance of getting this stickied to make that easier?

Sterling had already pinned it after someone suggested it so it should be easy to find.

Subscriptions are always suspended for new post notificatons on a thread until you visit the thread again. If you are like me and have your geekmail forwarded to your real email, sometimes my ISP simply eats some emails (thinking they are spam proably) so that's how you could have missed it.

Re: Discussion thread regarding the Math Trade Announce thre
Just throwing this out here, but I'd really like to see folks create at least a discussion thread for any math trades they announce.

I suppose I can understand not creating (or opening) a GeekList until the zero-hour. Personally, I would enjoy having the ability to subscribe to a discussion thread so I don't forget about a trade that doesn't happen for two or three weeks.

Thoughts? Am I alone here? Should I just quit fussing and make new sticky notes or a calendar alarm?

Actually threads are threads regardless of forum (including games, publisher, etc)... threads are composed of a sequence of articles.

The above article is actually the 1st article of your thread which is:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/345867

the thread link will still work even if the base post (article) is deleted.

I was wondering: would there be major objections to my posting links to the occasional Flea Market geeklists in this venue? Obviously it's a bit like putting Junior Mints in the popcorn, but it seems like the audiences are likely to overlap enough that it would be more signal than noise.

I think it's best to start a new announcement thread distinct from the MT announcement one. Note there is also an ultimate trade announcement thread as well that's pinned.
