Very pretty, but a restaurant take-out container as the illustration for a bakery? That isn't right.

I like the art but UhhhClem makes a good point - maybe a graphic of one of those meat-filled bows or a dan-tat (sp?) would be more appropriate for a bakery? Unless this is just a generic graphic used for most buildings?

The graphics on the tile look "too busy". First priority must be the tile to be easily readable from a distance.

I agree with Geo. It's clever, but between the stylized English font and the Chinese characters in the background, readability would probably be an issue. In this game, it's important to be able to see what all your opponents have in front of them at a glance.

If the tiles are differentiated by color, I don't think this would be much of a problem.

Sonja,

The game is set in NY in th 1960's at the beginning of the second wave of Chinese immigration in the US. So it has to look that way.

Cheers,

sophie

I don't see a problem with the picture as is. I've never been to an actual Chinese bakery, so it's hard to say.

My real question though is if there's a ballpark date for the release of the game. I've been wanting this game a long time and I'm not getting any younger.

except for the colorblind; the two groups I game with have at least one per every session, I like the idea of a different shape / type of building for that purpose only. Otherwise i'd agree on the busy tile argument going around... Maybe without the extra lettering behind the bakery, it would be good. this style is starting to grow on me though.

Cheers to Sophie for taking the constructive, sometimes harsh, criticism with dignity. Nice going.

from the original, i did like having a name over the business (e.g., "Ming's Antiques"). adds a nice flavor, i think.

i did find the colors of the tiles too close together in the original (although there is a logic behind it, with all the 3s being green, all the 4s blue, etc. not clear that this is necessary or even helps gameplay, though.)

sophie, how big would this tile using your example image be when produced, please?

it is possible to choose colors that minimize the problems color-blind people have.

You're quite early for that!

Actually I'm right on time... today is the day Festivas is celebrated! See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festivas

Speaking of being too early (or late depending on the perspective)... those wishing folks Merry Christmas now are too late... Christmas was actually a couple days ago. The mix-up that causes most folks to celebrate it instead two days from now is that when Pope Gregory created the new calendar, folks switching from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar failed to adjust the date and just kept it December 25th on the new calendar. That's of course if the switch was made at the time the Pope decreed the new calendar in 1582. Now folks still using the Julian calendar won't be celebrating until Jan. 7th 2008 as the Julian calendar continues to shift from the solar holidays. We won't even get into how Christmas came to be celebrated on the Winter Solstice when scrupture (Luke) narrows Jesus's birthday as being in a different season (late Summer).

Or were you refering to the Chinese New Year? That was an obvious pun on the game "Chinatown" Though it looks like I'm not that early... it's only a little over 6 weeks away....

No need for that... just keep the original art, at least for the tiles. It worked well.
