Hi,
I’m totally new to gaming and I’d like to start with a good sci-fi or horror game that has rpg and dungeon crawling elements and a good narrative. I intend to play solo, so the experience must be solid in that respect.

Any recommendations?

I was about to give up my search and just get Gloomhaven (apparently it’s the best thing since sliced bread) or LotR:JiME, but I was directed here by knowledgeable people.

If you post your question in the 1 Player Guild, you may get more responses.

I don't actually have a recommendation for what you asked for, but they will at the guild

Arkham Horror is great solitaire.

I always felt I was writing a potential movie script as the game played out.

Mansions of Madness: Second Editionis ok solo. Just have to run an additional character. Beware, series can be a money sink with all the expansions.

I agree with the 1PG recommendation to find out more.

The 1 Player guild will inundate you with recommendations my friend. They are masters of all things solo and a very kind group to boot! Come join up. Plus you may find yourself flush with

Sci Fi AND Horror:
Deep Madness (the will be a prequel kickstarter)
Nemesis

Sci Fi:
Space Cadets Away Missions (hard to find)
Zombicide Invader
Project Elite (real time)

Horror:
Mansions of Madness 2e (money sink)
Arkham Horror LCG (money sink)

Do not get games just because a lot of people rave about them. Many people also actually don't like those games. Particularly about those two:

GH: Complicated rules. Semi cooperative hidden information doesn't work well for solo. Incredibly long setup/teardown times. Needs a ton of time commitment.

LotR:JiME: While it has better scenario replayability than MoM, MoM is better at delivering the theme with superior soundtrack and voice acting. MoM has mini puzzles that LotR lacks, and MoM has dice.

I think June was/is the revised target date, resulting from taking on board feedback from what they shared about the pre-production approval copy.

That's what's holding me back. I can't afford too long a session with the kids and everything. Set up would kill it.

Fire Team Zero is excellent, a tense game, hard but rewarding, but may be quite difficult to find.
My best solo experience is with Eldritch Horror: it's more than a game, it really is an adventure (and the game is fun and steamlined compared to AH). I never had so much solo fun in any game ever.

There are lots of games that could fit your description. I suggest watching some play through videos to get a good feel for how they play and whether you might like them.

One game that came to mind when you mentioned narrative was Mansions of Madness: Second Edition, which plays well solo and with other players. However, it's not a campaign game, if that's important to you. My favorite game for that is Shadows of Brimstone: City of the Ancients, but be aware that you do have to assemble the miniatures that come with it. The stories that the game tells are amazing.
