Would you find a countdown helpful when saying the spies reveal script?

Normally it would be like:

1. Everyone close your eyes
2. Spies open your eyes. Spies look around and make sure that you know all the other spies.
3. Spies close your eyes. Everyone's eyes should be closed.
4. Everyone open your eyes.

---

I'm thinking about including a countdown between 2 and 3 so it would go like this:

1. Everyone close your eyes
2. Spies open your eyes. Spies look around and make sure that you know all the other spies.
2.5 The spies have 5 seconds left to recognize the other spies: 1-2-3-4-5.
3. Spies close your eyes. Everyone's eyes should be closed.
4. Everyone open your eyes.

I think this could help newer or first time players but I also fear that it would annoy more experienced players because it expands the introduction especially when several additional roles are used.

Would you find this annoying or helpful as a new / experienced player?

Looking forward to hearing your opinions on this.

I have played this with a lot of new players. I usually do something like:

2.5: There should be 3 spies. If there are more or less than 3 spies, say something now so we can start over.

That gives everyone enough time to look around and also prompts people to say something if a mistake was made. I've never had an issue with spies not having enough time to find each other.

I did a countdown but now do something like Stephen.

Edit - I think it is best to talk all the time to hopefully mask any noises. I also make sure everyone has their first on the table and raise their thumb even when playing without special roles. We did have a couple of games where spies had trouble spotting each other due to where people were sitting.

I do something similar to Stephen as well. Not only is it helpful to new players, but it ensures the deck was constructed correctly. I’d rather spend 5 extra seconds there than find out 30 minutes later.

When I'm doing the script phase, I always tell spies to also rise their thumbs so that they can easier find each other without trying to find who might have their eyes open.

It's much better to ask for spies to open their eyes, look at each other, and acknowledge the evil in each others' hearts.

Sorry for answering that late.

I think I'll add all your suggestions as they all sound reasonable and helpful.

Won't include the "acknowledging evil" part although I love it
