I'm looking at the Old One's tech "Underground City", which allows them to build a ship in addition to a fortress.

What in gods name is a fortress?

Does it mean colony? Star base?

Giving a hyper token to a colony which they're unable to?

Someone please explain.

'Fortress' is any unit which ignores damage below its defense. Colonies, Starbases, and Citizens are generally fortresses.

Which means that fortresses NEVER go to re-fit (salvage). They are either destroyed because they received damage equal to their defense, or they are unharmed completely, and remain in the area.

Any unit that has a little castle icon (instead of the Shield icon) next to its defense value.

but in game terms for the Old Ones, it's Citizens, Starbases, and Colonies.

Interesting Side Note:

Watching it played by the professionals, Battle Damage does not stay marked on a unit through the battle, like it would in Magic the Gathering.

So if you're attacking a bunch of Fortresses with Pre-Battle & Post Battle damage, they have to beat the damage with that battle phase's dice.

E.g.
A Venge Player manages to take out a person's colony & a citizen for giving someone else a Research Organic.

The Venge player attacks their Hateship. They roll a 7 for their main attack, which is enough to destroy the colony. The extra point of damage on the citizen is wasted.

Because the Citizen sent the Hateship to Salvage, the Venge player gets a post-battle attack roll.

They roll a 5. This is not enough damage to remove the citizen, who proceeds to blow raspberries at the Hateship as it limps off into the distance to Dry Dock before figuring out what to do with no house.

The Hateship's damage is added in Post-Battle, and so in your scenario I believe the 5 would be added to the leftover 1, creating a total of 6. But you're right, insofaras if the Zevolt Dragonship has excess damage during Pre-Battle, that will not carry over to anything rolled in Post-Battle.
