The Traitor is a Special Conspirator. It’s the only character that will throw off the Sentinel when identified during the night phase.

Put it simply, the Traitor is a Conspirator that appears as a Citizen to the Sentinel. This gives an edge to the player with this role, since the Sentinel won’t be able to identify and accuse him, meaning he has a greater probability of surviving for longer.

During the night phase, when the Sentinel wakes up and points to the Traitor, the Moderator will clearly communicate: “No, that player is not a Conspirator,” typically done by shaking his head.

It should be noted that the Traitor never wakes up during the night, not even when the Conspirators are called. Also, Conspirators don’t know who the Traitor is (so it’s possible for them to eliminate the Traitor), nor the Traitor knows who the Conspirators are (so it’s possible for him to accuse a Conspirator).

Finally, if the only player left on the Conspirators team is the Traitor, the night phase will pass without eliminating a player. This means that the only way for the team to win is by the Traitor surviving until the end.
