Rodger MacGowan just tweeted the very sad news that Richard H. Berg has passed away. See:

https://twitter.com/RBMStudio1/status/1154885530649165825?s=...

I am sad to hear this. Richard's game designs were always intriguing and fun. Often somewhat fiddly and complex. And quite often brilliant. His designs were immersive and full of historical flavor. I am a big fan of many of his games, but the GBOH series, he designed together with Mark Herman, is my favorite.

Having only corresponded with the man beyond breaking out a few of his designs over the years, he was a delight, and we are all in his debt. It is a great pity that there's no random events table to tweak this result. Rest in peace, and many thanks.

Great fellow. An affable and fun foodie who loved gaming, but loved life even more. Probably found a half dozen exceptions in the rules before having to throw (and miss) his leader loss roll.

Very sad to hear this. On FB I had the chance to talk food with him once or twice.

Previous to hearing this I'd started reading and prepping for my first playing of "Battle of Shiloh" by WEG.

My thoughts to his family and friends. A true legend and pioneer in the hobby.

Disappointing news. I didn’t know him at all, except by reputation, but none of that was of any interest to me. Rather, more important was that he was an enormous contributor to the wargaming hobby over many decades. Some of his designs lacked development but I loved the detail and character in them, often quite unique and fascinating.

Discovering the GBACW series and Terrible Swift Sword: Battle of Gettysburg Game in the early 80s was one of the most important early "WOW!" moments for me in this hobby. So I owe him a debt of gratitude for that alone.

This means that The Rise of the Roman Republic will never have its proper version of the 2nd Punic War.

He was--is--eminently quotable, and one of my favourite designers. He will be missed.

A sharp wit and an agile mind who pushed the boundaries of
boardgame design over a long career. I am saddened that
there be no more of his designs coming out.

I own five Berg games - Conquistador, Medieval, Successors, A Gleam of Bayonets, and Genesis. Oh, and the S&Ts with 13 and Desert Fox may still be hidden away somewhere.

I think I'm offering my group either Medieval or Successors for our next game night. The GDB episode with Berg was a fun listen; everything I would have expected from one of the old SPI stalwarts.

Let's all go roll some dice.

Immediately after hearing about Richard Berg's death I suddenly realized that I've spent more hours playing his games than those of any other designer. And I don't think anybody else is even a close second.

Terrible news. A piece of wargaming history. A lot of his games weren't so much my thing, but there are still quite a few that I like. And whatever you thought of him, his writing was always witty and generally penetrating.

My condolences to all Richard's family and friends.

Great game design makes the complex simple, replayability maximum, and abstraction credible.

It’s not how well you roll that counts but how well the dice suit the game.

Really sad news. He provided all of us with many hours of pleasure and great gaming. Thoughts and prayers for his family and friends.

I counted at least 56 games that I own or owned that he designed.
