All,

My brother, Mick Uhl, passed away on this past Bastille Day from heart failure. His health had been declining over the years but in that time he had acquired a large hoard of board and computer games. Many of these have never been played with and the counters and pieces are in their their original packaging. He didn't have much money but he treasured his game and book collections. I've not been able to go through his entire inventory yet since I don't have room in my house for it all. I already own, in my collection, copies of a number of my favorite board games that my family played with him on many a Sunday afternoon. That means I'm looking to sell off the ones he owned on behalf of myself and Mick's other siblings. We'll never be able to play them all!

The purpose of this email is to solicit interest in the game community to consider purchasing some of Mick's games. I've begun selling his like new copies of the GCACW series on eBay. I will begin to populate the game collection page with every game that I'm selling. In the meantime here's a brief and incomplete summary, by manufacturer and quantity, of Mick's games that are currently stuffed into shelves and tables in my basement.

Rio Grande - 11
GMT - 9
WhiteWind - 6
Days of Wonder - 3
Uberplay - 3
Mayfair - 3
Fantasy Flight - 2
Z-Man - 2

There are many games in storage boxes that I haven't gone through. There many Avalon Hill games, many of them played, including old AH games from the early 60's. There's even a strung-together 1958 copy of Gettysburg! He even has a mini-hoard German board games which are unplayable by me since I don't read or speak German.

If you're interested in or even thinking about buying any of these just let me know and keep an eye on the collections page for new game entries.

Thanks,
George Uhl

Thanks Norman, I miss playing games with Mick a lot. We were playing Through the Ages: A New Story online for the last few years until he passed. I did a lot of play testing at AH with Mick in the 1970's but once I got out of college, moved away and started working, I stopped playing games for a long time until I moved back to Maryland. Mick designed games that I never played unfortunately, including Dinosaurs of the Lost World. I hope it was fun!

Thanks for your condolences!

I wish I could have met your brother. I love these kind of vintage hobbyist games and it would have been wonderful to hear the perspective of one of the founders of the hobby. Put me down for interested.

Back in the late 1980's, Avalon Hill tried to operate a retail outlet in Baltimore (on Joppa Road, I think) to sell its products. I stopped in a couple of times, bought the "new" ASL rules and the first several ASL modules, as well as back issues of The General.

I remember Mick was "working the store" a few times when I came in, and we would have some nice gaming-related conversations.

Mick came across as a really good man. I'm sorry to hear that he's gone.

I've been meaning to snag a copy of Knights of the Air for 30 years now; perhaps its time I finally did.

Would be nice to see a lot of the Avalon Hill games remade with upgraded graphics, high quality components etc..

On a side note, I never tried Wizards Quest. Would like to try it some day.

George,

I am very sorry for your loss, I appreciate you letting us know.

I lived in Maryland from 2014-2016 and I had always wanted to meet your brother and thank him for his work, especially his his game Knights of the Air. I subscribed to Avalon Hill's magazine The General, and I remember reading his articles there.

First Richard Berg and now this, all very sad.

Best regards,

David

I am very sorry to hear of Mick's passing. I met him a few times when I visited the HQ on Read & St Paul Sts. He was working on Gettysburg '77 at the time, and was really enjoyable to talk with. A really good guy.

My condolences to his family.

All,

First off I want to thank everyone for their kind sentiments regarding the passing of my brother, Mick. He was a very private person and so it's very special to us, his siblings, to learn how much he meant to the gaming community.

I've begun the laborious task of inventorying his massive game collection. It was simply too much for me to go game by game and assess its quality and put in the BGG collections page. Instead, I have imaged most of his games and put them on Google Photos for public access. I gave my best shot at organizing them by manufacturer or language. There are still more games in storage to go through which I will be posting pictures of soon. I think he'd rather have his games played by members of the community that see them disposed of by other, less noble means.

Take a look at the games in each of the Google photo albums listed below and if you're interested in one or more of them let me know and I will rate their quality for you. We can take it from there. Most of Mick's games were in very good to brand new condition. A few of the older AH games, like Panzer Leader, have water damage so I'll probably recycle those. There are some vintage AH games that I have yet to post and I will let everyone know when I do.

I remember Mick from the old days as a playtester at Avalon Hill watching MNF at my apartment with Bruce Shelly and Rex Martin together. Here’s a vanilla milkshake for you! You couldn’t find a nicer gentle man.

The Old Guard is truly beginning to pass. I remember the great days of the 70s-80s buying a new game and playing with friends. Wish there was a board game Hall of Fame for these creative geniuses to be remembered when down the road some kid says, whats a board game dad! shake
