Hello I am looking for recommendations for a good 6 player game. I am not a hard core gamer but I am not afraid to try something with a little depth. When I am thinking of six people I am thinking of the times when 3 couples can get together. As a general rule most of our wives will not want to play anything too deep.

We always enjoy Settler's of Catan but this plays 4. We also like Ticket to Ride but it only plays up to 5. I would maybe consider one of the Settler's expansions for 5-6 players but looking at some of the reviews it seems like the 5-6 player games might be too long & not as fun as regular Settler's.

I think I am looking for something that either plays in a little over an hour (so we could play it twice in an evening) or something that plays in 2 - 2-1/2 hours total time in one game.

Any idea's?

Show Manager is good. As is Plague & Pestilence. Democrazy and Pow Wow
are also good.

Please don't ruin Settlers by using the expansion (donning flame suit now).

Start with For Sale or Liar's Dice to warm the group up. For a meatier game, try:
Power Grid (could play once)
Medici (could play twice)
Mü und Mehr (if you like card games)
Winner's Circle (a bit lighter than the others, but great fun with 6)

Showmanager / Atlantic Star are nice, but hard to find.

I heartily recommend the following quicker games:
The Castle of the Devil
For Sale

For longer ones, I recommend:
Antike (lighter)
Imperial (heavier)

Railroad Tycoon for 5 or 6 is best.

Power Grid for 5 is great, 6 still very good.

I with you, don't go for the Settlers expansions. They change the game completely. It should simply be regarded as a 4 player game only (3 if you have to).

Regards

David

Bohnanza is a fairly good game for 6 as you really need to pay attention during other peoples' turns (so not much downtime). It'll play in about an hour for 6 players.

Saboteur has been VERY popular among my friends, and I'm sure it would work well for couples (you'll get a lot of "I can't believe you won't even trust your own girlfriend!"). I find the scoring to be a bit wonky, but for sub-$10 games I can't recommend it enough. It's a bit short for what you're looking for, with about 15-20 minutes per round, but a series of three or four rounds could get you around the 1 hour mark.

Bohnanza - ideal for 3 couples
TransAmerica - only plays well with 5-6 (4 is pushing it, 2-3 is no good)
Winner's Circle - light and fun
Hoity Toity - ideal for 3 couples
Citadels - can run a bit long for what it is, but lots of fun with 6
Diamant - I think the English version is Incan Gold and maybe hard to find. But if you find it, it would be perfect
Mystery of the Abbey - lots of fun theme and great with 6

of all the games mentioned above, I think Hoity Toity is a great choice followed by Bohnanza and/or TransAmerica.

Suggestions like Power Grid might be a bit too meaty for a big mixed crowd. Don't get me wrong a 6-player Power Grid is perfect for me, but not for any 3 couples I know.

Let me just say - not everybody dislikes Settlers with 5 or 6!

I love it with that many, in fact I prefer 5 or 6 to 4. More people means more trading.

These are the six player games that we play:
Citadels - a fun beer and pretzels game that doesn't take long.

Antike - a great pure strategy civ/wargame (Rondell Wheel)

Power Grid - A very popular eurogame with the auction mechanic

Iliad - A fun war themed card game for six

Conquest of the Empire - A great fun wargame with some depth, my personal fave

Elfenland is a great 6 player and won't take as long as some of the other 6 player games suggested.
Also:
Tongiaki
Transamerica/Transeuropa will both play 6 and game length is short
Mystery of the Abbey
Bootleggers
Fearsome Floors
Duel of Ages

All of these are pretty good games for 6 people.

Just so I can add my $.02.

Considering the wives, and what it can be like to play with my wife, I would rule out Roborally. Great game, but it is a game I've found only a few women that like to play it. Of course, that may just be my experience and shouldn't be taken to reflect any actual reality.

I would second (third, fourth, etc.) Bohnanza and Power Grid. Great games for groups. I'm not typically one to say that men or women do well at one game or the other (everyone is different), but *generally* (in my experience) women do very well with those two games. Bohnanza seems to appeal to a cooperative play style while Power Grid is more about spending to the max while staying on budget.

My other suggestions would be Fluxx (lighter game, but fun for a larger group) or San Juan (much of the same fun as Peurto Rico, but not as complicated for first time players).

Doh. I just thought of the fact you can also use tags to find what you want.
Go to a 6 player game that's listed here. You'll find tags for that game. One of them will say +6 player. Click on that and voila, 40 pages of 6 player games.
