Cool. 3 of my 10's right in a row. Anyone want to take a dump on Go while we're at it?

If it's alternate name is Battle Star Galactica I will.

I still haven't gotten my passport to travel to that side of the world.

Off on a tangent reminiscing about the past warning!

I remember a record store called Northern Lights being more popular, but I went to Cheapo's more because they were across the street from the Source. Made for a nice 2 in 1 trip .

All I remember about that Source is it had someone who would paint minis for you (she usually charged the original cost of the mini, with some exceptions), and even though they didn't normally carry computer games, I got Aliens for the Apple ][ from them.

There was also another Source that closed earlier than the others in Eagan, I believe (I remember exactly where it was, I’m jut not sure if it was considered Eagan).

That was the first place I ever bought anime, sometime in the late 80s. First was the American-ized Robotech, then more authentically JPN stuff like Vampire Princess Miyu and Bubblegum Crisis.

Also around that time I won a VCR from the Source for some month or so long contest thing that involved getting points for buying things, bonus points for various things, and me just spending too much money at that time between RPGs, boardgames, a new hobby of anime, and so on. I still have that VCR (mainly for some ‘reconstructions’ of Doctor Who episodes I have where only the original audio exists, but people matched that up with telesnaps so you’ve got at least something visual).

Some other stores I miss:

1. Dreamhaven in Dinkytown (yes, there’s still another one, but its not the same)

2. The store that was next door (and downstairs) to Dreamhaven in Dinkytown in the mid 90s (had boardgames and RPGs, including some used ones). I remember buying Star Wars Queens Gambit there back when it was new (the first of 3 times I’ve owned it), and some Advanced Squad Leader stuff.. but really lots and lots of stuff during my college years.

I also get confused because I think Dreamhaven also moved between the two locations(downstairs and upstairs), and I can’t recall which was which

3. Phoenix Games on Lake St.

Okay:

There were four original Sources:

1) The "Basement" Dinkytown store, between DreamHaven and the post office. When the taxman shut them down, DreamHaven expanded downstairs, then eventually bought the building at 912 W Lake Street and moved the upstairs half down there. DreamHaven closed that at the end of the school year in 2003.

2) The Roseville one, just north of 36 on Rice Street. It's in the former strip mall that's now a senior community center, next to the Dunkin Donuts. This is the one that Bob owned.

3) Saint Paul on Snelling, next to Home Video (and across from the Cheapo). There's now a Buffalo Wild Wings and a tanning salon there.

4) Eagan, I guess. I never went there.

Any casino style game played for money (poker, blackjack, whatever). I loathe all of them. Even if I don't lose I just don't like gambling.

I've lived in Eagan for most of the last 40 years, collected comics for a good chunk of them, and I don't remember there ever being a Source in Eagan. Where was this located?

My least favorite game is any game where a player (or players) are not engaged (talking, texting, playing on their phone throughout, stepping away from the table multiple times, etc.).

I struggle with this a lot. I'm a talker and have the the attention span of a brain-damaged gnat. I pull out my phone between turns more than I'd like (though not as much as the phone-addicted people I see these days), and I frequently get us off topic talking about things that are not game-related.

I'm always looking to fix it, but I'm also not sure how committed I am to doing so. As far as the phone goes, yeah. I really, REALLY need to put it somewhere I just can't get at it while playing a game. I'm going to keep making a concentrated effort to be better about that. Tonight, during Gloomhaven, I pledge to go put it on the charger for just that reason.

The talking... I'm not so sure. I get together with friends to game as a social event, and I like catching up. Sure... when we play Bridge, we get in far fewer games than we could, but I think we all still have a good time.

Now, when we're playing an RPG, that's a different story. Again, that's an area where I'd like to get it much more under control... even the off-topic conversation. It's not as easy as it sounds, though.

I totally get your frustration with that. I think a happy medium is the best solution, but who knows?

I essentially have two gaming groups that I play with:

The first group plays the heavy and serious stuff and while there’s some chatter, the focus is on the game and playing the best you can. (Read: Win at all costs.)

The second group plays a lot of dice/luck games and it’s all a laugh. Some people are in both groups, but the group dynamic is pretty clear and obvious.

Once I know what the expectations are, I can know how annoyed to get.

FFG: 6

Are they the most polarizing publisher?
Depends. Does anyone really like any of their games? If not, then they aren't polarizing =P

Their edition of Through the Desert wasn’t completely awful.

That might be the nicest thing I can say about FFG, although some of their subsidiaries do some decent work. (Looking at you, Days of Wonder.)

If you go north on Cedar, turn right on 13. Down a ways, there was a mcdonalds on the right, and behind that a bit was a strip mall where the Source was.

Actually, FFG announced they were done with Descent work.

Oh, decent work. Carry on.

Dropped by Level Up/Mead Hall on my way home from work last night and liked what I saw. There's more play space now and they said there are plans to expand further to build a Spyhouse Coffee down there. I picked up some comics - they have buy 2 get 1 on graphic novels/TPBs which is pretty awesome. Staff was super friendly, lots of bike traffic which always makes me happy, and had a generally good feel. The selection of things I'm most interested in is small, but maybe that will change over time or I can do some ordering through them. I'll definitely be back.

Hmm, don't remember a Source there. That location was *also* a Cheapo for a long time (Cheapo/Applause had stores on both sides of Snelling!). IIRC there was a used book store in that strip for a while too.

Swung by the LU/Mead Hall store a bit ago (and saw Pete there!) and it was really much nicer than before. Way better layout and more inventory. Still a lot of magic going on, and the new game room was full o' magic players. But yeah, coffee shop coming and it sounds like it'll add quite a bit more space to the store. Worth checking out.

What time were you thinking? I'm always up for a game of "the most expensive game I own" that I've played twice . . . . shake

Don't tell Jeremy, he tends to get sucked into collectible games that aren't Magic. whistle
