I’m very sad to hear he has died. Francis was a true inspiration to me and laid the base for our game Mega Civilization (now Mega Empires). But also my number 2 favorite game is 1830, also from his hand. The was a genius. One of a kind.

He was really something. Civilization predated Euro games by ages and yet in many ways was a Euro. A unique mind and one which changed boardgaming for the better. He will be dearly missed.

I'm not a player of his games but I know that he offered so much to the industry.

He will be sadly missed.

Very sad news. I played both 1829 and civilisation back in the the day and thought then and now the designer had to be a genius. I did write to him regarding a query I had regarding 1829. In the days before e mails etc he wrote back to me by letter and was extremely helpful. Still have the signed letter which spookily is dated today's date 25th October 1983!
