The map in Magnus Rex changes each time you play. And like any true 4X game, it rewards exploration. Claiming the most Event tokens, which are scattered through the map, will bring a distinct advantage.

Also due to the random nature of the map, certain resources may or may not be available in your immediate neighborhood, forcing the player to alter their strategy or the chosen victory they’re chasing. A strategy that works one game may need to be re-thought the next..

The Map is also strategic in terms of chokepoints; there’s a lot of them!. Creative thinking in your city layout may help in overcoming some of these chokepoints. (Or maybe you want to build an empire that’s difficult to get in or out of?). For example, placing a building on a mountain removes the movement penalty of the mountain. Or placing a harbor on a water tile, which makes that water tile passable for land units (can create a “bridge” across a one-hex water).

So in summary, the map, in addition to being beautiful, will dictate how you play each game!
