Following with indecent swiftness on the heels of episode 2, we present Mortification 3, a less friendly look at our best friend Death.

The game will start when full, allowing for a suitable gap in the BGG werewolf schedule.

For reference, the original Mortification game can be found at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/220003
(Please note that this game has slightly altered rules for Gravedigger and Misanthrope roles.)
Mortification 2 is found at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/226832

13-17 Players. 5 roles are guaranteed (2 Wolves, Gravedigger, one Gravewatcher and the Priest); the remaining 8-12 roles are uncertain. All roles will be selected from the following, in the given numbers. No roles or abilities not explicitly mentioned will occur in the game (though players should note that one player may be a mason in addition to his/her given role, dependent upon Villager selections). Please be aware also that the vagueness is for player uncertainty; the true roleset will not actually be random.

SPECIAL roles are given in italics

Evil
2-3 Wolves
0-1 WolfCub
0-1 Sorcerer
0-1 Cultist
0-1 Necromancer
0-1 Witch

Neutral
1 Gravedigger (tough)
0-2 Misanthrope

Good
0-1 Wolf Seer
0-2 Quasi Seer
0-2 Special Seer
1 Mortuary Priest
1+* Gravewatcher
** Martyr
** Physician
** Parity Hunter
0-7 Villagers

*,** - see Villager below

Wolves – single nightkill target. A Wolf may be may be brutal (free additional nightkill action at the time of death) or shaman (receives full role information on nightkilled players). There will be a Wolf chatroom.
Wolfcub - starts game knowing the Wolves. Will become a full Wolf if targeted for nightkill or if fewer than 2 Wolves remain alive. The Cub may be brutal or shaman, and this ability will continue if promoted to full Wolf status.
Sorcerer – nightly view: 'Seer' / 'Not Seer' (Seer type is not specified).
Cultist – starts game knowing all Wolves and special abilities AND what aux evils are in the game (but not who they are). Wolf Cub counts as an aux evil.
Necromancer – nightly views one player who died in previous 24 hours and learns full role.
Witch – nightly targets one player and specify SPECIAL or NON-SPECIAL. Will block the action of that player if the role-type is correct, irrespective of alignment (ie could end up blocking Sorcerer, Necromancer or Wolf, prevent brutal action, even stop Wolf-kill if only one Wolf remains). Cannot target same player with same specification on sequential nights. The Witch will start the game knowing the identity but not the role of one Evil player. Witch-block of a player trying to use a one-off ability cancels the attempt and the ability remains unused.

Gravedigger – nightly buries bodies from mortuary and then digs graves. Must name for LIVING players, cannot duplicate names. Needs 3 correctly filled by game end to achieve victory. If blocked by Witch, will only dig one new grave. See below for full details. If the Gravedigger achieves his target, or finds at any time that it is impossible to achieve his target, he will immediately leave the village.
Misanthrope – nightly view: 'Evil' / 'Villager' / 'Other'. If not viewing, may choose to leave the village. Wins if either has left and all villagers are ALREADY dead, or if lives to game end. Misanthrope is a 'Preferred Lynch' and will be lynched if on any day has at least 2 nightfalled votes (this being in addition to the main lynch target if that is a different player). Misanthrope does not count for parity.

Wolf Seer – nightly view: 'Wolf' / 'Not Wolf'. Wolf Cub will show up as 'Wolf'.
Quasi Seer – nightly view of 2 players: 'Same Alignment' or 'Different Alignment'. Note that unaligned roles appear to have a different alignment from all other roles, including other unaligned roles. May not ever self-target.
Special Seer – nightly view: 'Special' / 'Not Special'. Can choose once per game to learn alignment as well.
Martyr – nightly target one player and die in his stead if that player is targeted by wolves.
Physician – nightly targets one player and if that player would die due to wolf attack, will delay that player's death for 24 hours. The saved player will automatically die the next night (unless already lynched during the day) whether or not he is targeted again. The saved player will NOT be informed that he has been saved in this fashion.
Parity Hunter – if alive at game end with one Wolf and no other parity players, good wins.
Mortuary Priest – nightly views all unburied bodies and learns 'Special' / 'Non-Special'. Once per game may choose as night action to learn alignment of a new corpse as well.
Gravewatcher – once per game may view the graveyard during the night and learn the roles of all corpses, though will only know what the headstone is named, not the true corpse identity. If viewing a grave containing more than one corpse, no role will be learned. Blocking by a witch will not use up the once-off action. A Wolf-cub will appear Wolf when buried, whether or not he has converted to full Wolf status prior to death.
Villager – Villagers will have the choice on N0 of becoming (for the duration of the game) Martyr, Physician, Hunter, Gravewatcher or Mason, subject to certain restrictions. See below.

MORTUARY AND GRAVEYARD
Night activities:
Priest visits the mortuary and sees all the unburied corpses, to learn 'Special' / 'Non-Special' on each.
Gravedigger buries bodies from the mortuary in the graves he has already dug.
Gravedigger digs new graves, to bring the number ready to 2.
Gravedigger names the tombstones on any empty, unnamed graves. Names must be of players who are still alive in the game.
Gravewatcher(s) view the graveyard
Wolves kill

On N0, the Gravedigger digs a single grave only, and names it.
If a player dies and a grave with his name on it is empty, he is immediately buried there, whether the Gravedigger is still alive or not. That body will never appear in the mortuary, and the grave is closed.
If the Gravedigger finds more bodies in the mortuary than he has open graves for (which could happen due to a brutal effect or thanks to a physician postponing a death) then he must still bury all bodies in any graves which are open, even if that means burying multiple bodies in the same grave. He may choose what distribution to make, but cannot bury multiple bodies in the same grave and leave another grave empty.
Only in the event of bodies lying in the mortuary and no graves being open, will the Gravedigger not bury any that night. (This could happen, for example if a brutal were lynched and 2 of the 3 bodies resulting from the previous nightkill, the brutal and the brutal's target had graves named for them.)

VILLAGER RECRUITMENT AND INFORMATION TALLY
This is sort of a reverse-working of the superhero-villain mechanic used to such good effect in the Marvel games recently. Instead of a master Evil role choosing how many villains, the Villagers choose how many auxilliary good roles will be in play. Kinda.

Villager Choice:
Each Villager may choose on N0 to become, for the remainder of the game:
……… (a) Martyr or Physician (maximum 1)
……… (b) Hunter (maximum 1)
……… (c) Gravewatcher (maximum 1 additional)
……… (d) Mason (maximum 1)

Information Tally starts at 0.

For each Villager that chooses to remain just a Villager, Information Tally decreases by 2.

For each Villager that tries to take a role, information tally increases by 1. If more applicants try for a role than are permitted, none will actually gain the ability but the tally will still increase by 1 for each that tries.

Villagers will not know if their attempt to gain abilities (a) to (d) have worked, and will only know when they try to use their power and succeed/fail. Note that the failure will be indistinguishable from the Witch blocking a non-Special role.

Mason partners will be chosen (not necessarily randomly) from all players. 2 Mason Villagers might end up partnering each other, or might partner other roles. A Mason Villager will not be told anything about his partner's role (though a non-Villager who finds himself in Mason chat will naturally know that his partner IS a Villager!)

Villagers who either choose to remain as Villagers or Masons, or who manage by oversubscribing to a role to get no special ability all count as Villagers for a Misanthrope's view and Victory Condition. A Villager who successfully takes on Martyr, Physician, Gravewatcher or Hunter will no longer count as Villager.

Information Tally:

The Wolves receive information on n roles not in the game and n roles in the game, where n is the total Information Tally. This information will be randomly chosen from all uncertain details.

Example: 5 Villagers
2 try for Gravewatcher (neither will gain the ability, but will only discover this when they try to watch and fail. The failure will be indistinguishable from the Witch blocking)
1 tries for Physician - success
1 tries for Mason - success
1 stays Villager

Total information tally n = 2 + 1 + 1 – 2 = 2.
Information given to the Wolves might be (for example) that there is a Physician and at least one Special Seer in play, and that there is neither a second Gravewatcher nor a Cultist.

Night 0
The following will need to submit N0 orders:
Gravedigger (first grave name)
Villagers (role requests)

There will be negative N0 views provided to Wolf Seer and to Sorcerer (if present). No other roles will receive N0 views.

Well, 13 is sufficient, so we shall start Tuesday regardless.
As people drop from the large games currently running we may pick up the last couple.

Re: Mortification 3: 4 more places, last call for participants!
The Cassandra Automatic Vote Tally System

Your Moderator has enabled the Cassandra Automatic Vote Tally system
for this game. In order for it to function correctly, your votes will
need to be formatted correctly. The following rules will explain what
you will need to do:

Players
1. All votes must be bolded

2. The entire vote statement must be bolded and enclosed in bracekts: [vote jmilum]

3. Only one unvote and/or vote per post. You may have both an unvote
and a vote in the same post, but the unvote must come before the vote

4. You may [unvote all] instead of naming the current player
you are voting

5. If you [vote nightfall] your vote will be locked (voting
nightfall is allowed in the same post as a vote for a player, but it
must come after it, this does not violate Rule #3)

6. Vote tallies will be automatically posted to the game thread hourly
if the tally has changed. The Tally and Vote Logs (for each game day)
are also available on the Cassandra game page.

7. If your vote is not counted be sure to check the Vote Log page and
see if it was marked invalid and why.

8. Case does not matter and simple typos will not cause the vote to fail.

9. You may [vote no lynch] if your game allows it.

10. Quotes below the vote/unvote statement may cause the vote to be missed,
especially if they contain bolded sections.

11. Non voting players will be listed in the tallies. This will only be
correct if the Moderator notes which players have been killed (see below)

Moderators
1. The moderator will need to post [Dawn] when the day begins
(after the night results are posted) and [Dusk] when the lynch
deadline has passed and the day is over. Votes will not be counted
after [Dusk] has been posted. They will be registered again
after [Dawn] is next posted.

2. You may include a day number in the dawn and dusk post for
informational purposes, but it will not be used by the system.
Cassandra will increment an internal counter each time it sees
[Dawn] no matter what day is shown in a dawn post (i.e.
[Dawn 3] the three is allowed but ignored)

3. After dusk has been posted, the Moderator may go to the game page
on Cassandra to request a Final Tally to be posted before the normal
scan period has elapsed (i.e. Game Y gets scanned at 45 min. after the
hour, if it lynches at 7pm the moderator may request a tally to be
posted from the game page before 7:45pm. it will also be posted
regardless of whether or not it has been changed since the last
posting) - Do this by clicking on the 'Retrieve Final Lynch Time Vote' link.

4. You will need to note which players were killed via the lynch or at night by
either posting [killed jmilum] in the thread, or by going to the game
page and editing the player list. When posting in the thread, be sure to post
[dusk] before posting the lynch kill, and post [dawn] before
posting the night kill.
Example:
A. lynch time has passed so post [dusk]
B. goto the game page and select a final tally to be posted
C. check the final tally and post [killed melsana]
D. after the night deadline has passed post [dawn]
E. post the night kill with [killed kima]

Your Moderator has chosen to use the Longest Held Last Vote method for a tiebreaker - This is just for Cassandra system, and there may be a different tiebreaker specified by your Moderator in the ruleset.

Re: Mortification 3: 4 more places, last call for participan
It is Night 0.
Villagers have until 12pm Wednesday to select a role (Martyr, Physician, Mason, Gravewatcher, Hunter, Villager). Note that only a maximum of 1 Martyr/Physician, 1 Mason, 1 Watcher and 1 Hunter will be made. If a role is over-subscribed, none of the subscribers will get the role BUT WILL NOT BE TOLD EITHER WAY.

The Gravewatcher needs to submit the name for the first grave, in which D1 lynch will be interred.

Sorcerer (if any) and Wolf-Seer (if any) will receive negative N0 views. No other role receives N0 view information.

Re: Mortification 3: 4 more places, last call for participants!
wooolooohooooo! Villager again. For the love of...akdjgsdhfglkjsfdg don't lynch me this time.

SELECTION PLAN

1 person takes Physician (it's better than Martyr)
1 person takes Mason
1 person takes Watcher
1 person takes Hunter

and they all publicly say so. This doesn't give "confirmable" villagers for some roles...well, I'll expand on that later, but the point is, to maximize power, all villagers need to publicly state one of the roles they'll take.

For strategic reasons so not to let gravewatching go to waste this time around, I'm going to take the HUNTER role.

If I'm a villager, I will be remaining villager. Unless people think that's a bad play. I'm assuming we'll have at least four other villagers to fill quota.
