Thanks for this. Is the # of users only current ones? E.g. the entry for Black Box in 2002 stands out - 3,990 plays (2 users).

Wow, I've never even heard of Black Box - was this a niche hit back in the day or something? I precedes my era and doesnt even have any video reviews to look up info on it.

This is awesome. More data like this will make for more data geek smiles.

There's some fascinating nuggets in there related to some games with lots of plays but few users, versus a more equal play-to-user ratio.

I wonder how much of it has to do with the smaller userbase of bgg making the data a little wonky. You get one person logging hundreds of games of something now and it probably doesn't even make a blip on the radar.

Fascinating data! Play-logging is so worth it. I've been tracking for a dozen years and it's a kick to be able to go look back a decade and see exactly what I was playing, who I was with, and where we played. Thanks for this list, Aldie.

Not sure why he entered so many plays.

I'm guessing they play and log a lot of online games. These games can be knocked out pretty quickly, especially against AI players. I note they log multiple plays of Kanban in one day, and play it day after day. It's hard to think that's an in-person play.

I have a friend-of-a-friend who logs all their online plays. Tons of them. I was pondering about mentioned something like that earlier. I'm wondering if it's common enough that it sways play counts these days. Clearly it could affect them when the userbase was lower.

Edit: Yeah, pretty certain now. A lot of their plays leave Players blank. And for Brass: Lancashire, they have "ooth" for the Location. That's Order of the Hammer (http://brass.orderofthehammer.com/index.php).
For Kanban, "baj" is http://www.boiteajeux.net/jeux/kan/kan_aide_en.php
For Black Box, BSW is https://www.brettspielwelt.de/Spiele/?nation=en

... because I played them (and had access to the data). Just like Jason has analyzed I do log online plays, hence these numbers. (I don't do this manually, that would be tedious ...)

Black Box is (was?) playable solo on BSW even when you're actively playing another multiplayer game. I've killed a lot of downtime that way

I have two comments to add to this excellent set of statistics.

First, the list of top games played of all times could also be used as a guide to "how to stock a Boardgaming Café." Some of my favorites would not be there (like Le Havre and St. Petersburg) but there would be enough choice that I could find something to play. (but it is also interesting that I have not played 63 of the top 100 games, and that I have never played a single game of twelve of the top most-played in 2019).

Secondly, it's interesting how the game base of players logging games has increased. When I joined in 2012, it seems obvious that there were only something like 10,000 or so people regularly logging games. Now, eight years later, there must be 25,000.

Has the total membership of BGG doubled in eight years? Or is it just that the percentage of people logging games has increased?

Yes, even though it is probably true that Ticket to Ride has sold more copies lifetime. it is a sad fact that BGG does not reflect the entirety of the world of tabletop gaming (shame!). The sort of people invested in the hobby enough to have heard of and played Terraforming Mars are the sort of people who would self-select to know about BGG, sign up as a member, and then log games. It is a three-step process. It's the difference between playing Scrabble on weekends with your grandmother (which I approve of) and playing regularly at tournaments.

With some apps available, it's a lot easier to log plays as you finish them, rather than writing them down, logging on, and then posting them.

Interesting to see classic traditional games like Chess, Go, Backgammon, Checkers were among the most played in the earliest years, but later got shoved out by "cult of the new"!

Thanks! The user based has gone up 5 times between late 2011 and 2019 - so the percentage of users logging games probably has dropped. Of two million users, only 25,000 or so logging games.

Membership probably has doubled several times, and logging has gone down.

I have to think the rise of smartphones had a big influence on this. I know that this is key to me being able to log my plays consistently enough to be worth it. I'd rather log nothing than log sporadically.

I think this is true, but I think if you apply that argument you wind up just having "Poker, Blackjack and then everything else".

(And that's just the western world.)
