I divided this type games by several groups, by game weight.

My favorite 18xx game for six players is two games of 1846 with three players each.

At one point a single person had over 2 billion plays of Magic: The Gathering recorded on BGG.

Seems like this kind of thing could be cleaned up with some fairly simple outlier discarding code.

(And was quite possibly already done by Aldie.)

Which is weird. The 80's version isn't that amazing to reward a ton of plays. The newer Black Box 2 on a hexgrid is much more interesting.

There’s nothing "weird" about it. I already explained (on page 1) why I’ve played that many "games" of Black Box in a fairly short time: It was possible and I had downtime to kill – loads of downtime

This type of situation is cleaned up by Aldie instituting algorithms that limit the # of plays that are counted in the "official" total play stats for each game.

Users are still allowed to put in any number of plays that they want... but behind the scenes Aldie & Co. definitely filter the play stats somewhat to make the final results less susceptible to the type of manipulation that the "millions and billions" of plays used to have on the total play stats results.

What really stands out to me is the shift around 2008 to games with card driven engines as numbers take a jump. Players brought in by dominion I’d guess, but a trend that continues even to today with popularity of games like wingspan and terraforming mars.

Sadly for me not a good thing as I’ve yet to love any card driven design of the last 10 years.

I also Like to see these figures in terms of average games played per player, since 1000 plays by one player give a totally different feedback on game replayability than 1000 people playing a game once !

Not surprised to see card games at the very top !

The problem is that the heavy games are underrepresentated, due to their lenght (e.g. 4 people play together a round of Twilight Imperium, makes 4 logged games, now take those 4, send a ninja, who replaces their TI copy with Loveletter, and you would get around 100 logged play for that game).

What I would like to see, is a ranking based on the number of games logged times the number of average logged game time/recommended time of that game. That would give a better estimate how much (in terms of time dedicated to it) a game was played.

That's why I personally look at both # of plays per rater/owner and time played per rater/owner and average the ranks of those 2 stats... which basically negates any strong bias towards either long or short games.

Wow, I've never even heard of Black Box - was this a niche hit back in the day or something? I precedes my era and doesnt even have any video reviews to look up info on it.
It's like the only game I remember my parents playing when I was a kid.
I wonder how much of it has to do with the smaller userbase of bgg making the data a little wonky. You get one person logging hundreds of games of something now and it probably doesn't even make a blip on the radar.
It's because game logging didn't begin until the end of 2003. So anything before that is where people "filled in from the past" whatever they thought they had played, so people did things like saying "Oh, I probably played 3000 games of Black box (or, really, just about any old game)" and then logged them under some pre-2003 date. And, as was noted on the first page, some people also count quick, knock-off electronic games. If those were counted, I'd have 3000 plays of Words With Friends. :)

An interesting list, to be sure. My gaming for the past 5 decades has been primarily war games.
Having cut my teeth on the early MB games, I moved on to AH then all war games from SPI, Conflict, etc.
Started wargaming in 1967 and never looked back. The list of wargames I've played is so extensive I won't go into details.

Yep, click on any game on BGG. You will see near the top "Log Play." But I don't use that method. I use the awesome app BGG Stats which makes it easy and quick to log your games which are then posted to your account at BGG.
