Here's the note FunAgain sent out:

Through the Ages & Rails of Europe available for pre-order!

Funagain Games is excited to announce that the long awaited reprint of Through the Ages, and Rails of Europe (an expansion to a popular railroad game from Eagle Games) are now available for pre-order!

A smash hit from Essen 2006, Through the Ages quickly sold out of the original print run, and a new edition has been highly anticipated since the announcement of a reprint earlier this year. Through the Ages is an exciting game of strategy and resource management. Players guide their civilizations up from Antiquity, through the Middle Ages, and into Modern Times. What will your civilization be like? Will it be warlike? Technologically advanced? Religious? Artistic? Choose from Leaders such as Hammurabi, Napoleon, and Gandhi. Build Pyramids, the Great Wall, or the Eiffel Tower. Your civilization's culture is yours to shape -- and you can do it differently every time you play the game. This edition's rules are identical to the original.

The game will be available in January or February 2008, with a price of $69.99.

You can pre-order Through the Ages directly from Funagain Games by visiting this page.

Ouch. That certainly is expensive for my situation. I almost always play with three other players and the game seems to have a general consensus of not being good for 4 players.

You need to get together with the people that are saying that it's only good with four.

Quite a bit less than I just paid for the original version, on Ebay.

I pre-ordered a copy. The cheapest shipping option for the US is ~10$ through fed-ex super-saver. Thus final price is 80$ unless ordered with a set of items to get free shipping.

And don't forget that you may have to pay extra customs fees on top of that!

It is not worth to pay so much so i'll also have to wait for the game to reach Europe...

Well the shipping cost is academic for me at the moment, as the Funagain ordering system is throwing errors when I try to place an order

I'm still interested in seeing what the actual game ends up looking like...I think it was stated that they were going to keep the art, but I would like to see what the finished product is going to look like.

Expensive relatively, but given the exchange rate (thank you, US government) I think we'll see a lot of games with this sort of MSRP coming down the pike. Certainly cheaper than trying to buy one of the originals in any case, as David desJardins mentioned...

Hmmm...I was hoping to purchase multiple copies to give them out as gifts (as well to save on shipping), but it's unfortunate to see that it won't make the holiday release. That sucks.

Personally, I've waited too, damn long to hem and haw about the artwork, the price, or the sweet spot for number of players. I know that several gamers whose taste is similar to my own think very highly of it, and that's really all I need.

Pre-ordered.

As I feared, having Funagain produce this game is barely better than it not being produced at all. I will play others' copies and be thankful that it is Z-Man who is in the running to produce Agricola.

I saw the original version last weekend. The nice thing is that the tiny beads fit exactly into the spaces, and you can see everything. I played it on a partially-custom version using small plastic cubes. They were much easier to pick up and move around, but did obscure some of the information, like happiness.

I think the boards need to be laid out differently. +Culture should be next to Culture. +Tech should be near Tech. And all the spaces for the values should be equal size. I really hate the decreasing size of the boxes and the fact that the Culture scale wraps, but doesn't line up.

In short, the physical design needs an overhaul, but I doubt it will get it.

Any FRED retailer should have this when it becomes available.

Wasn't the original retail price in the $60 range anyway? Or are you concerned about something else?

What does that mean? What makes you think the FRED version will be any less satisfactory than a Z-Man version would be?
