For your comment:

The gaming group here appreciates the basic version of this game, but it wasn't quite rich enough. Ok -- that's why there is an advanced version, right? Well - the spell cards and artifact powers are too powerful and change the game too much, making it too random.

Can we preserve the bluffing / bidding of the basic game and add some richness to make a new version advanced game?

Here's what we have tried:

1- Get rid of all those spell cards. This frees up the Spell Tent.

2- Remove the artifact powers. This frees up the Ruins.

3- Change the victory conditions slightly. Instead of simply having the most (6) artifacts, the goal is not have the best "poker hand". As such, it is better to have all three of one kind of artifact than a random collection. There are no "runs", so the real goal is to get matching artifacts. The first tie breaker becomes the most number of artifacts. The second is the player order, as per the existing game.

4- The Spell Tent is now used for "scrying tokens". The highest bidder gets two "scry tokens". (We use the spell cards for scry tokens. ) For the cost of a scry token, a player may peek at any face-down token (inlcuding the guard). A scry token can be used at any time.

5- The winner in The Ruins may (immediately) re-arrange his face-down tokens in the Palace. He may not move tokens to any new rooms, but may rearrange his tokens freely within the rooms he is already placed. In this way, he can make (surprising) plays for artifacts that match.

We've enjoyed these changes quite a bit. Often times, someone will get off to an early start with two of a kind, and then everyone else definitely feels the pressure to prevent him from getting a third or more.

Comments welcome.

SirGhost (#46654),

Have you tried playing with the two magic cards face up? Removes a lot of the random craziness, while still keeping the game interesting. And not using the artifact powers? That's just crazy talk right there...

The varient that uses the 2 face up spell cards is a quick and simple change that greatly improves the game without drastic changes.
