I learned something today... courtesy of an MSNBC article on tips for living longer:

For God's sake, don't pee in the ocean.

(Bodily fluids attract sharks.)

Does that mean that lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams are ok to pee in?

It's not enough to refrain from urinating. You also have to be very quiet because sharks have excellent hearing, and you have to remain very still because they are adept at sensing the slightest motion in the water, and you have to figure out a way to avoid giving off electricity because sharks have organs that enable them to detect the weak electric fields generated by all animals.

There have been tales of giant freshwater catfish that have eaten people but I'm sure they must be urban (rural?) legends.

Bull Sharks have been found in the Mississippi. They get used to diluted salt water from the delta in the gulf and swim up river. >shudder<

I HATE water I can't see in and this why. I'm happy to pee elsewhere thank you!

I used to fish a lot, and I've witnessed larger catfish (2-3 footers) catch birds, and once even a squirrel, off the bank.

I don't think any of the varieties in North America get bigger than 3-5 feet or so, and the vast majority of them would be smaller. Not really big enough to eat a human, but they do have sharp barbs which could seriously injure someone.

My uncle, who once aspired to be an undersea welder, said that one of his instructors told him that when he was working on repairs on a bridge over the Ohio river, that the welding arclight would attract the big channel cats, and when they'd stop for breaks, that there would be dozens of 4 foot and bigger ones swimming around the work site watching them. Said it creeped him out, but they never acted aggressive towards the divers.

For really scary catfish, you have to go to Asia, the Giant Mekong Catfish has been measured at 600+ lbs. surprise

You think that's bad? An even more terrible fate awaits for those who urinate in the amazon river.

Sheesh! You people, with your peeing in the ocean, and lakes and rivers... and the horrors that result.

Haven't you ever heard of public swimming pools‽

Tell me about it... My "silent partner" was experiencing psychosomatic pain ever since I read that article.
