So, here are the games I am considering to ask for for Christmas. I will mainly be playing with either 2 or 4 (mostly 4), and sometimes 3...but rarely, rarely 5 or more. I would like to get a nice mix of longer strategy games and some shorter (though still complex) 15-45 min games. I would also like a mix in terms of theme/mechanic, ie not too many resource management games, etc. Please comment on the games here....if you have something else not on the list that you feel fits my needs, feel free to reccommend that also.

Just as an FYI....I currently already have:
Tikal
Puerto Rico
San Juan
Lost Cities
Carcassonne
Carcassonne Castle
Caylus
Tigris and Euphrates
Louis XIV
Through the Desert
High Society
Settlers of Catan
Ticket To Ride
LOTR Confrontation
Blokus
Memoir 44

MY XMAS LIST:
El Grande
BattleLore
Hollywood Blockbuster
Yspahan
Maharaja
Mr. Jack
1960: The Making of the President
Modern Art
Blue Moon City
St. Petersurg

THANKS!

HeroCard: Rise of the Shogun with the HeroCard: Rise of the Shogun – Miko Expansion Deck and the HeroCard: Rise of the Shogun – Prince Expansion Deck so that you can play anywhere from 2-4 players (the base game is only for two).

A couple of thoughts...

Bear in mind that El Grande almost needs 5 to work well....Perhaps China would fit better here? IMHO El Grande is a better game but the number of players might be an issue...

Ra is a far better game than Hollywood Blockbuster and doesn't have the nauseating theme...

Your Xmas list looks great. I'd also recommend War of the Ring, RoboRally, and Dungeon Twister for some changes of pace. Too much cube pushing is bad for you.

Zach,

These are all great games. I agree that El Grande is for a 4-5 table, but it is probably the most well-regarded game on your list. For playing 2-3 player, (especially with spouse), I would move Blue Moon City and Hollywood Blockbuster (traumfabrik version if you can get it)to the top of the list. Both play well with 3. Yspahan is iffy to me, not the best choice. It can be easily broken. I also agree that Web of Power (or China) is one of the best 3 player games around.

Another game that has been big in our group recently is Zooloretto. Simple, yet fun. The expansion pack should also be readily available by Christmas, which adds a lot to the basic game.

Modern Art is another excellent brainburner of a game, but needs minimum of 4 to really work well.

I love St. Petersburg! Alas, no one else ever wants to play it with me. Says something about it, I guess.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas

Carol

consider adding Imperial since you're into euros so much. I recently played this and it was pretty fun and unique.

MY XMAS LIST:
El Grande (great game, but best with 5)
Hollywood Blockbuster: (interesting auction/economy mechanic)
Yspahan: (good choice, great game with 4)
Maharaja: (never played)
Mr. Jack: (never played)
1960: The Making of the President: (never played)
Modern Art: (awesome game, perhaps dont need this AND hollyBB)
Blue Moon City: (good choice, but would be lower on my list)
St. Petersurg: (mixed feelings, fist few plays are great, but doesnt seem to have long replayability)

I would also add in PowerGrid, it's heavy enough, fun enough and plays well with 4, it's really a must for all collections.
Another suggestion would be nexus ops, it's a good 3 to 4 player game.

Enjoy
-
James

Long setup time. Looks nice. Plays in an hour at most. Light, tactical battle game that doesn't blow me away, but it's alright.

A while ago the term "super filler" was coined by Mike Higgins for games that are longer than fillers but still not long games, very much like the 45 minute games you are asking for. Check this list for a great collection of super fillers for two players:

I've played about half of your list of games and love them all. Traumfabrik (Hollywood) is my favorite game. 1960 is my current "game of choice"....it's only two players and very involved, but it's a ton of fun. My game group was just asking about playing Modern Art again, but it only holds 4 players. Fantastic w/ 4, however. We especially like naming the paintings as we sell them.

I have Battlelore and hardly play it. Not that I don't want to play it, but I also own C&C, Battle Cry, and Memoir. I now think this is a mistake, because I can only play so much of that type of game at a time. Now that they're coming out with a Mem 44 Air Pack I want to go back and play those again....meaning that it's going to take that much longer to get to Battlelore.

Battlelore... Battlelore... Battlelore...

Wings of War is also a nice light wargame (works for 2 to 4) that doesn't take too long to play.

On the euro side, I just love Domaine and would highly recommend it.
