House rule: Max one gray cube per hop!

Today while setting up Balloon Cup the four-cube hop got populated with two gray cubes, a blue cube, and a green cube, with high score winning the hop.

In the course of play, one side of the hop received a low green card, a low blue card, and the gray one card. The other side got a high green card, a high blue card, and the gray thirteen card. This left two gray cards needed to score the hop. Unfortunately, the player on the losing side of the top drew the gray four card and the gray ten card, then refused to play them for the whole game.

This meant that the four-cube hop never got scored, and the game wasn't fun for either player.

Since there are only five gray cards, this situation can occur any time a hop gets two gray cubes. Therefore, we now have a new house rule -- no hop can have more than one gray cube!

pduff (#50367),

Interesting. My fellow players would regard this as intentional design... holding back cards is an entirely valid strategy!

Part of it may have to do with whether you're playing with the Rio Grande rules (play cards on either side at any time) or the original designer rules (only play on your side until your side of the hop is completed). I much prefer the latter.

The reason I bring that up is that it's possible for an opponent to more often be "forced" to play such cards. (Sometimes it's better to surrender an already lost hop than play cards which will cause you to lose another one.)

Ooh a little higher, now a bit to the left, a little more, a little more, just a bit more. Oooh yes, that's the spot!

Perfectly valid play, although holding two card permanently somewhat reduces your hand size and you may end up being forced to play them eventually anyway depending on the draw for other hops.
